Not exactly apples to apples, but does Japan celebrate deaths of their "brave" kamikaze pilots from WW2? Maybe they do, though I seem to recall reading they have an overall muted response nationally to the entire conflict.

Regardless, Waco was a debacle, and ATF would be well-served to avoid reminding folks how badly they screwed up.

They could have picked Koresh up numerous times prior to invading.

It was the government that chose to make a dramatic scene and involve everyone.

I believe that Koresh believed it. But what does that have to do with anything?

They could have arrested him a hundred times before rolling tanks up to the Mt. Carmel Center

I do not. Therefore he must be crushed. If, by the way, we can come out of the deal with some good publicity, all the better.

Signed,

The ATF and Attorney General Butch Babe.

Such as?

My memory is a little hazy on it. But weren’t there multiple times with both sides could have ended things peacefully? That’s what I mean.

I put the majority of the blame on the lettered agencies, no doubt (and some should’ve faced consequences). But it didn’t have to come to what it came to, and either side could’ve prevented it IIRC. That’s what I mean.

I understand the vitriol directed at the ATF and general mistrust of government alphabet agencies.

That said, Rob Williams graduated a year ahead of me at my high school and he was a good guy, from a good family.

Koresh was 100% grooming and raping kids. That doesn't excuse the government mishandling the situation, but he was a cult leader pedo and shouldn't be defended.

Na. But I believe this country was founded upon freedom of religion.

Wackos included.

When did Koresh become someone looked up to? Wasn't he leading a sex cult?

I don't doubt that there is some truth to this, but the government was not able to make this case.

And they tried. He did marry a 14 year old when he was 29, but it actually was legal...gross but legal.

I have no sympathies for Koresh at all, and will not shed any tears for him but the kids didn't need to die. There were numerous opportunities to grab Koresh when he was alone.

The ATF royally fricked up and Koresh was a pedo. Both are true.

FBI commanders consulted then-Attorney General Janet Reno who in turn consulted President Clinton. The ultimate decision to break the siege by force lay with Clinton and, after discussions with Reno and senior FBI officials, the President agreed to have the standoff broken. The armoured vehicles would breach walls and pump CS gas into the main building, smoking out the Davidians. Loudspeakers would tell them that no armed assault was incoming and warn them not to open fire. The amount of gas pumped in would steadily increase for every two hours the Davidians refused to surrender.
