One of the last people to be able to use the ultimate bar pick up line: “Me? Oh I work for NASA. I’m an astronaut.”

Thought the command module was the one that orbited the moon?

Why is there a picture with him on the lunar surface in your OP?

The early ones were absolutely hilarious too.

Go read up stories on Wally Schirra. Dude was hilarious between the Gemini and Mercury missions.

ETA: My favorite is when he put a "Beat Army" sign in the window of the module during a rendezvous with another module which had a Navy grad inside of it.

Richard Gordon, proving moon landing conspirators wrong since November 14,1969

Also proving some nerds will have no problem stealing your girl.

Cool pics but the last two are a little misleading. Gordon was one of the few that got to the moon and never set foot on it. So close, that would have sucked.

Painting by fellow Apollo 12 astronaut, Alan Bean, called "The Fantasy" showing all three Apollo 12 astronauts on the surface of the moon.

Go read Michael Collins' book "Carrying the Fire."

He gives a great viewpoint on how it was being the first man to have to stay in the command module during Apollo 11.
Really goes in depth into the training as well.

The command module pilot had to live with the very real possibility of returning home alone while his two crewmates set trapped on the lunar surface waiting for their air to run out. The lunar module had one assent engine, no backup, if it didn't fire they were stuck there forever. Nixon had his speech writer prepare a speech that he would use in a national address if this situation were to occur. Fortunately everyone got off the moon, but the last 3 planned missions were canceled largely because Nixon felt we were pressing our luck and he didn't want to lose a crew while he was president.

I believe he was also one of the first GMs for the Saints under John Mecon (who went through a bunch of them).

Two crews were training for Apollo 17, which was going to be the last to land on the moon (after the final 3 scheduled were cancelled). There was a big emphasis placed on geology for that mission. Gordon figured his crew had it in the bag because he had a Geology PhD on his crew, Harrison "Jack" Schmitt. Schmitt was the first non-pilot astronaut. When time came to select the primary crew and the backup crew, Deke Slayton moved Schmitt to Gene Cernan's crew and made them the primary crew. Dick Gordon was still pissed of 40(+) years later.
