We've screened in our patio and the ceiling fan is not much of a match for the Texas heat. We don't want an oscillating fan or mist spray which will wet everything.

I've seen evaporative coolers on Amazon for about $350 - the ad claims they are useful on patios.

We live about 40 miles SW of Fort Worth, so the humidity is usually low.

Ive heard they dont do much of anything in humid situations

Since they work by adding more humidity to air

“usually low humidity”.

Dude the humidity isn’t overbearing but it isn’t low by any metric but a tropical/subtropical setting.

Spend some time in Arizona or Nevada in the summer for “usually low humidity”. I came pretty close to not being able to drink water fast enough to keep up.

But FWIW, the metric for a swamp cooler being viable is at minimum less than 50% humidity.

(It’s over 60% today here in FTW FWIW)

If the humidity is low, then it should make a significant difference.

That won't do anything in a screened in porch.

Seems like a lot of money for little benefit.

At $350 it may be worth a try but I suspect it is still too humid. You'd have to go to Odessa or El Paso.

Go buy a swamp cooler and try it out for the next month.

Get back to us on that.

Consider an arctic air (the newest version...the "ultra") cooler ($40).
I have two. In short, it doesn't do much, however, it does make a slight difference. Basically, it is a computer fan blowing over ice water. I wet and then freeze the filter (it is designed for this). I bought two extra filters and just rotate them from my beer fridge freezer. They last about 30 minutes or so. When coupled with my ceiling fan, it drops the temp on my back porch about 3-4 degrees more than just the fan alone (the porch faces SSE, is in the shade, and is 10 x14 in size). The big knock is that if the fans are on high, it is a tad noisy. I usually have music playing so it isn't a concern. I live in Covington so humidity is high. I really only use them when entertaining during the summer. Still, dropping from 82 in the early evening to the mid 70's aint a bad thing. It is pretty damn comfy actually. They are a slight pain in the arse with changing the filters, but they are small, cheap (maybe 120 bucks with tax for two units and two extra filters) and somewhat effective.

Arctic Air Ultra

Yes it is Walmart, but I bought these wearing just my drawers.

Here is a link for a pretty good review.

youtube review

It isn't a swamp cooler, but it is something to consider if humidity is an issue.

Hahaha, I hear ya. FWIW I don't have that one. I have the new version which gets a little bit "cooler". Plus I have two of them and a ceiling fan. The reality is they don't do much. I sure as hell wouldn't replace my central AC with one (or 100). They work okay for what I described. As for the rest, I just gave the man a cheap option. He has to decide.

Go get you one of these, I built a plenum and put the exhaust hose on the plenum and aim it at the porch swing and I’m happily cooled

They work great in Arizona...as long as the relative humidity is low, they will work.

Evaporative coolers don't work in high humidity climates.
