used to go to the local barber in Kuwait for haircut and the dude was a scary Afghani with a rag head. when it came time to dress up sideburns out can the straight razor. 25 years later I still only get a hair cut every six months because stress tramidic syndrome over that straight razor
A lady that used to cut my hair would use a straight razor at the end to clean up the back of my neck. The first time she pulled that out I was in panic mode, but she never nicked me once.

Are they better than the Elton John razor?

Tried to dive into the world of old-school wet shaving the other week.
Holy overload of information.
I used this method before I grew my beard out. There are some guys out there that are WAAAAAAAY into it. I think the site is Badgerandblade.com that had a discussion board dedicated to it.
It was overwhelming at first, and there is definitely a learning curve to the process, but once you get the hand of it, it's a much closer, cleaner shave. I wouldn't jump in with a straight razor. Try a double edge safety razor first. Merkur is a good brand you can find on Amazon. I liked the Derby blades. There are some really nice, fancy shaving soaps out there as well if you want to go that far. And definitely get a good, alcohol free after shave while you're learning. You're going to frick your face up until you get the hang of it.

Some folks call it a Sling Blade, I call it a Kaiser blade. LINK

I’m not going to buy any more products from that company for obvious reasons.
I know what you mean of course, but you should explain why. For the group. Not for me. I know why of course.

Once, but I forgot it's down the road, not across the street

My barber breaks out the warm shaving cream and straight razor after he cuts my hair. He uses feather brand blades. Hell of a close cut.

My granddad tried to shave with his father's straight razor when he was a small boy. It left him with a lifelong scar on his face.

I started using a straight razor after someone on here recommended it. That was probably about 3 years ago. I have not even thought about trying something else.

Safety razor baw. I use astral blades, quality badger brush, proraso cream products. Nothing like applying warm shaving cream to your face and dipping your razor in hot water before shaving

You went to Badger and Blade didn't you? Lol.
I did that, then tried a few, now I have my favorites.

Yep.
Semogue 620 boars hair brush works well with the Proraso.
I alternate Astra Platinum, Dorco, and Kai blades. Kai are the sharpest, even moreso than Sharks.

You're looking for a butterfly safety razor, not a straight razor.
Big difference.
I've been using one 25+ yrs.
It's what I learned to shave with.

If I mess up while shaving, am I going to die? How difficult are they to use?

It doesn’t take as nearly as long to shave as people let on.
I have a few spots I just can’t quit slicing myself when I get too fast

Another safety razor user here. Love it.
Benefits:
-cheaper over the long run
-warm shave
-closer shave
Cons:
-takes practice to be proficient
-upfront cost
-takes a little longer to have multiple shaves across different directions (until you are proficient)
Worth the investment. Merkur handle with feather blades and a badger brush for me.
