childhood best friend was murdered. His body was found ages later buried in a field a mile from the street we grew up on. High school kids partying found him and were texting pictures of his skull around. Went to the site at night and stepped over the crime scene tape. Found bones and pieces of clothing, as the police clearly weren't that interested in an extremely old cold case and didn't thoroughly clear the area. Holding your buddies bones in your hand is tough. It's like one thousand movies playing in your head all at once. Every fist fight, every skateboard ramp, every late night Nintendo session, every BB gun war. No killer was ever found. No burial. No closure. Still open case.

Damn that sucks. I lost a good friend that way too. It’s a weird feeling when those memories seem to pop out of thin air.

Yeah but I was a fireman.

They say you always remember your first. How about this, we were looking for a 7 year old in a burned out trailer. I stumbled on a small lump in the left over charred trailer parts, uncovered it a little and there it was. It didn't look like I thought it would.

My youngest son is a fireman of less than two years and he starts to tell about some of the stuff he sees and I cut him off, Nah I am good. Way overworked and underpaid for that job. He always wanted to be a fireman for some reason.

Sticks with you.

I smelt it a couple of times after Katrina heppin’ friends attempt to salvage their personal property where there were debris piles nearby.

Told the nearest cops/law enforcement officers.

One of the first responders were some of the Florida Capitol Police force who mob’ed immediately following the storm. Good dudes.

You don’t forget folks who help out on those situations.

Somehow I’ve been spared for the most part. Only body I saw up close was in front of a pizza/Italian restaurant. My wife and I were eating on night and we heard tires squeal and a bang. I walked outside and saw a body in the road and intestines/guts hanging out. Some guy was trying to do CPR and I didn’t have the heart to tell him that he was wasting his time.

Was 2nd vehicle to pull over at an MVA. 16 passenger church van from North LA went off the road on I-49 and flipped several times before coming to rest against the tree line. One young lady was ejected about 50 yards. She was clearly deceased when I checked her. We helped extract a couple of others from the van before first responders got there. Also sucked helping carry that stretcher back up the incline to the interstate. That is much steeper than it looks from the road.

I watched two people die when I was 16. A buddy and I were driving up US Hwy 431 coming into Huntsville. It had just started raining and the bottom fell out.

A car coming towards us in the opposite direction spun sideways across the median and directly into a van traveling about a hundred meters in front of us. The van careened off into a field and the car spun around at least a couple of times.

We were the first on the scene. I ran up to the car and it was totally smashed in on the rear. The driver and passenger were clearly dead. My buddy went off to check on the van. It was two elderly folks who had both suffered back injuries and couldn’t move out of their seats.

I watched the driver begin to gargle bloody foam out of her mouth. I would later learn it was called a death rattle. By this time, others had stopped. Someone heard a baby crying in the car. Before the first responders had even gotten there, a person had pulled it out and rushed it to the hospital. It died later that night.

Besides that, I’ve seen death in the military.

Saw a crash happen in front of me once. Van full of kids. No seatbelts. We helped them best we could. Two of the girls, sisters, didn’t make it. Driver who hit them was celebrating his 25th birthday and was intoxicated. Not a scratch on him. The adrenaline was super high and I had no idea he was drunk. I just remember him being inconsolable. He knew he really screwed up. It was an awful experience. Don’t drink and drive folks, and buckle up.

Had an employee from another office working on site at my office.

He didn’t show up to the home office on a Monday. We went to the corporate apartment and he was dead as a hammer. Was a nauseating feeling.

frick that

My wife went to visit her brother in the hospital, expecting to find him sitting upright and talking fine. Instead, she found him lying on the floor, dead.

It was not good. Distraught does not describe the situation.

You guys were treated like crap by the American public I still think it is a stain upon this country's history was the way Vietnam vets were treated but consider how the country handled Iraqi and Afghanistan vets

those young men and women would not have received the sympathy and empathy yet it not been for the shitty way y'all were treated
