Anyone remember the E. Kirby Smith Dormitory Fire back in 1971?

Does anyone remember the fire which broke out in the bank of elevators at E. K. Smith dormitory, at the end of the fall semester in December, 1971?

I remember it being a pretty terrifying event. I was on the 6th floor of the highrise dormitory. Smoke was billowing out in all the rooms and everybody had to evacuate the building via the stairwells, at about 1:45 AM!

Fortunately there were no injuries that I was aware of. I remember final exams being held that morning; being so rudely awakened at such an ungodly hour made it impossible to focus on courses.

The fire was deliberately set, but why? It seemed like nothing more than an end of semester prank, but the potential for mayhem and even loss of life was great.

I don't remember if the perpetrator(s) were ever caught.

Talk about a cold case. We had fire alarms pulled every finals week and extinguishers sprayed all down the stairwell to the whore door. Still love that term.

I remember when the electricity went out and I had to walk down five flights of stairs in pitch black darkness. That sucked worse than seeing a big turd in the middle of the elevator.

In '98-99 the elevator was out frequently. I loved my 10 flight trip upstairs in 90 degree weather. Luckily, I had a shite ton of beer to refresh with.

Kirby Smith was a confederate general. I can't believe somebody hasn't raised a stink about that.

Not to mention Raphael Semmes avenue in front of the Union, and several other place names around campus.

1971? No wonder you're a democrat, you need your social security and upper denture plate paid for by Medicare.
