I tore my labrum to shreds a few years ago. Had to have a SLAP repair and a biceps tenodisis. My biceps tendon is now screwed into my arm around my armpit area.

It hurt like hell when I injured it. The doctor said it looked like a bomb went off in my shoulder. I still have some minor residual tears but deal with it. It was years before I could comfortably throw a ball.

An X-ray isn't going to show much of anything. Go see your MD, and he can do some tests to give a preliminary diagnosis, but the definitive test would be an MRI.

Yeah I figured as much. What did you do for pain relief? Advil is tearing my stomach up and I definitely don't want to go the pain killer route.

When I tore mine they did a contrast Mri and then surgery to shave it. The surgery was out patient and it helped a ton. Almost zero pain now. Nothing really helped with the pain before

I had a slight tear two years ago. It will still get sore after strenuous activity.

Mine never had me on edge of tears though....so I could just do PT to rehab it.

Well which did your tear? The labrum or the muscle? Or both?

An X-Ray shows hard tissue. Do you think you tore a bone too?

If you tore your labrum and you're in that much pain, it will likely require surgery. The surgery isn't bad but the rehab is very frustrating because you lose all strength in your shoulder.

No such thing as a labrum muscle, an X-ray won't tell much, you need a full evaluation by an orthopedist and probably a MRI, lots of things in the shoulder present similar

An X-Ray is damn near useless for a shoulder injury. You're gonna need a MRI and possibly a CT scan to determine the severity of the injury.

I had both done for my shoulder injury. I tore my labrum and chipped a bone during Judo. Had orthoscopic surgery on it to repair the tear and remove the tiny pieces of bone. About a year later I was back to lifting as heavy I was prior to the injury.

I've been on both sides of this. Tore my labrum playing ball in college it hurts.
Worked in ortho and ortho trauma for 5.5 ish years. Can't tell you the number of pts and surgeries I've been involved with.
And X-ray is used to make sure there isn't any bone damage and is always and I repeat always the first thing that gets done. That is the building block of the ortho treatment plan. (Above post stated the X-ray isn't needed, but yet he had bone fragments? Also, X-ray (c-arm/fluoro) is literally used throughout the entire surgery thus the need for the initial X-rays for comparison. If the diagnosis is determined that your labrum tore then an MRI is needed and read. If that proves positive, then you see a shoulder specialists and he does the rest.
Shoulder surgery sucks and you will more than likely need rehab after. That being said.... THE most important thing you can do post-op is to follow the surgeons instructions to a T. They know what they are doing and do these surgeries everyday depending on the pt flow through their clinic. Good luck.

The labrum is cartilage, not muscle. The amount of damage will determine how to treat it, if it's significant it can be repaired arthroscopically. I was out a little over a year but am as good as new. Go see an orthopod and get a diagnosis.

Yes..but labrum isn't a muscle...it's a ring of cartlilege around your shoulder that holds the joint in place.

Well, the laburm is not a muscle. It's cartilage that attaches to muscle, tendons, etc.

But, I've torn my right shoulder twice (along with biceps and rotator cuff) and I've torn my left hip.

what does it feel like?

Put both arms straight out in front of you and have someone push down on them and you resist....does it hurt? Extremeley weak? What about the same thing when your arms are out to the side?

Hip - anytime my hip angle was closed I had a very dull pain. Then, when I ran the pain became sharp with impact.

This.

Got mine fixed 3 years ago.

I was 24 at the time and recovered in a couple of months. Swinging a golf club in 6-7 months. Its great now unless I sleep on it weird.

FWIW, mine occurred from dislocating my shoulder and thinking it was a good idea to put it back in place myself using a wall

See an orthopedic. And if you really tore your labrum you earned a Vicodin or Tylenol with codeine. I'm not saying become Heath Ledger, but don't suffer through an acute injury because "drugs are bad mm-Kay."

MRI is all that is definitive.

Don't know your age or what you do activity wise, but understand your shoulder may never be the same. Example being an offensive lineman is pretty much done after this type injury. Are you now bedridden? No. But are you going to be a monster cross fitter? Probably not.
