My main concern is ensuring it's actually his. I don't want him to do or say something short of a paternity test that would get him hooked for support etc. to a kid that isn't his due to some quirk of British law.

Well this is an easy one. Don’t say or do shite until you hire a UK Barrister who specializes in family law. His military pension, “stationed” so I am assuming military here, is potentially at stake. Don’t go cheap on this, spend the cash to hire an expert.

Have zero details so far. He mentioned it as a sort of joke then he dropped it.
As we were walking him through the airport I swear I pulled him aside and the last thing I said to him was always use a condom.
