So against my better judgement, i bought one instead of a Ford (which i know how to work on extensively) and it seems to have a plethora of temperature issues.

Bought it for my currently unemployed cousin. Told him when he got a job he'd get the car.

Its an 04 Passat. My question is, does this model usually get issues with temperature gauges and what not? No leak, and no change in the actual gauge on the dash. But the light consistently flashes "Stop" and Check coolant.

Im guessing its a gauge issue but this is a bit out of my area. Ive replaced 80% of this hunk of shite so im hoping its a small issue.

Diagnostic report on my scanner doesnt show a damn thing.

They are absolutely garbage. Look at what is for sale around you on craigslist and damn near every cheap vehicle is german.

Does it have the 1.8L turbo 4?

If so, you done fricked up son.

That engine has a plethora of issues. What you're describing sounds like the oil mixing in the coolant. Common problem on that car. Google it.

My old man bought an 04 Passat GLS for dirt cheap since he knows how to work on German cars. Ended up getting rid of the POS less than a year later.

Replace the thermostat.

On GMs that used to be where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. On a Volkswagen it's probably under the back seat.

Getting a foreign car (Volvo) is literally one of the worst decisions I have ever made. Can’t take it to the shop without dropping $500 and it always has something wrong with it. I hate it.

VW are known to have terrible electrical gremlins. If you aren't losing any fluid then its probably just the sensor or connector to the overflow. It probably looks like a ball where you fill the radiator fluid. I believe that year VW uses a special type of coolant, so if you are refilling it make sure you get the VW approved stuff.

I would disconnect the sensor first, spray it with some electrical cleaner and reconnect but use a dab of Dielectric grease when reconnecting it. See if that fixes your problem.

Update: Person before me did NOT put the appropriate coolant in (G12). After a flush , it seems to be running without a hitch.

Good fricking call man. Apparently it heated too quickly. Saw traces of stop leak in the previous coolant too so ..hooray. Ill look for that later.

This will get this a-hole to work and back.

There are like 8 different kinds of coolant now.

shite like this is why I don't screw around with used cars anymore. You're liable to get one that was maintained by some grandpa who is genetically incapable of buying / using any oil that isn't SAE-30.

We can laugh at this now. I mean, that is pretty effing brilliant. Only a society as authoritarian and bad at engineering as the Germans could come up with this... STOP! STOP! STOP!

Meh, sounds like he only spent a couple grand, so no harm no foul.. and honestly, i think it’s a pretty cool gesture that he bought a car for his cousin at all.. doubt i’d ever buy a car for any of my cousins unless i was truly loaded.

I have a 2006 Jetta that was given to me. Electric fan stopped working, so I thought no big deal. Ordered the cheapest one on amazon and swapped it out. Turns out the non oem fan didn’t spin at the same rpm and the coolant would get hotter then normal. Had to take the new one out and reinstall a OEM fan. Volkswagens can be a PITA to work on.
