When I was kid I grew up in the piney woods near Pineville, LA.
We seldom "spent the night" with our friends, we "camped out".
The older we got, the more junk we'd take with us into the woods. Sleeping bags grew into tents, bikes grew into motorcycles, cooking over a smokey pine campfire grew into a Coleman stove.
It's the nature of us. Always making it a little bit better. Then, maybe, we find that we work so hard to bring our home into the wilderness with us, that we have to evaluate what the original goal was.
Not second guessing your hobby at all. I've had many, and regret none of them. It's just funny what we as humans do.
Enjoy the outdoors!

Nice set up. I’ve drive to most state parks around me and do the primitive camping every chance I get.

“overlanding”
Sounds like a term a Sovereign Citizen would use in an argument.

Is over landing a fancy name for primitive camping?
I read about it, and it sounds like primitive camping or even "car camping" combined with a really long road trip.
That appeals to me, but there's no way my wife would participate.

It’s a matter of time before you want a bigger camper especially once children enter the picture. You’ll drive a SuperDuty and pull a 40’ fifth wheel within ten years. Enjoy!

Camping is awesome if it's stress free. Carrying a lot of stuff is not stress free. Something like the OPs got looks easy to deal with and not a lot of work.

We have a 30 gallon water tank, water pump, diesel heater, and lights running off their own battery. I carry a Coleman stove in case it’s raining and I can’t cook over fire.
I’ve been shopping for a tankless water heater so we can have hot showers.

That sounds like camping. I’ve camped. But not with a tent way up on top of a trailer.
That looks like a broken face waiting to happen when I try to get out of it to take a drunk piss at 4 a.m.
I've got an 8 person tent with a screened in front porch, and I sleep on a queen size air bed on a fold out base.

ETA: Is "overlanding" to camping what that whole cohabitation/shared space or whatever the millenials were calling it is to "finding a roommate"?

I can get addicted to staring at a fire and just keep drinking.

I’ve been thinking about getting a rooftop tent for my jeep.
I’ve been holding off to see how the new Broncos are though, because I would ultimately want a 4 door (my jeep is 2 door).
Can someone please explain why it needs to be on top of something? That makes no sense. Harder to set up, harder to get into, harder to get out of...

No clue what you're talking about but.
I love your truck.

I find it easier to set up. It can take a little longer to take down than a ground tent. And yes it’s more difficult to access.
It’s ultimately personal preference. I’ve slept on the ground without tents and and with tents no matter rain or shine.
Being off the ground keeps me more dry and the 3 inch mattress and all my bedding folds up in the tent and never has to be removed. The tent and trailer keep my truck free of loose gear and more highly organized.
