I thought about getting in shape and going into the Reserves but I got into the Preserves instead. Mainly strawberry and raspberry.

Go into the Air Force Reserve CCAT Aeromed track.

Go ANG or USAFR, not urmy or marines (unless you're a glutton for punishment, like getting treated like poop and enjoy being around dumb people - many who don't realize they are dumb).

I'm in the reserves. Don't recommend as an O unless you have a govt gig or a job that really understands. It's a huge time commitment.

Huge time commitment outside of your drill weekends and 2 weeks a year? Are you medical?
Posted on 7/9/20 at 3:46 pm to LoneStar23
No. Yes, everyone I know spends significantly more time than drill weekends/two weeks a year. Most drill weekends are 3-4 days and then you typically do an additional week on top of the regular two weeks.

Depending on what you want to do, the AF has flight nurses for active duty and I believe guard and reserve but not 100%.
I would see what the manning looks like for the specific job you want to go in to. Active duty has many perks that guard/reserves don’t, but they may not have any slots available.
You could also look in to the active guard/reserve spots. You’re in the guard/reserve but basically “active” all the time.

The one weekend/month and 2 weeks a year is a fallacy for most O positions. Be prepared for at least 5 days a month and a 60-90 activation every other year. Depending on your employer this could be problematic but you are protected under USERRA regardless.

The Air Force Reserves has Flight Nurse program, Aeromeds. I've flown hundreds of them. Also, the CCAT team basically is an airborne ICU in the back of a plane. I flew some really messed up guys with CCAT team in Afghanistan.

Just realize the reserves are the governments way of maintaining a capability the military needs in a pinch on the cheap. That means when the shite hits the fan like if another war starts, or another global pandemic hits, or who knows what else you will become a full time military critical care nurse very quickly.

If you’re not doing combat arms go Air Force.

First, what specialty? I did 11 years AD, and now have 5 years in reserves. It’s easier to transition to AD if you really enjoy it versus being stuck in a AD commitment. If you have a degree don’t go enlisted. Be prepared to deploy regardless of specialty. Your civilian job by law will have to accommodate. Also, look at the guard too.
Overall, it still can be a significant time commitment, meaning keeping up with 2 jobs can be a chore. But, I still enjoy it and you won’t have better camaraderie than with your unit.
