Like the storage wars type auctions where you buy a unit and bid against others? What kind of coin can you expect to turn?
My investment manager told me this might be a great side hustle to bank away some extra Chashola.

Here, they post the names of the lessees of the units. You can pretty well tell who is going to have a storage unit full of junk and who might have a promising stash of stuff.

Is an estate auction like a garage sale?

I got to these. Mostly to sell, but I will buy if the opportunity presents itself.

I've only been to three, and I had some info about each one. Once, a train collector had a storage building and skipped out of town. Thought I might catch some old toy trains, but ended up with a bunch of junk I didn't want.
Bring cash. Dress right (you'll probably have to move some stuff). Bring your own lock. If you do it a lot, you'll have some money losers.
I wouldn't do it.

Estate Sale > Garage Sale > Storage Bidding
By the way, if you want to see some great auction items, go to the Morphy Auctions website. They have stupendous stuff. Right now there is a great petroliana auction coming up.

Ask him how much money he has made doing this? You will end up with a bunch of junk you cant resell.
Storage wars is made for TV. They bring valuable stuff so it looks like they are getting a deal. Go to one of these and you will see, if it was of any value it wouldnt be auctioned. Buy a powerball ticket because its the equivalent of what you are trying to do.

I have a friend who owns a pawn shop, he says its rarely worth it unless you are the business of selling used items (jockey lot type stuff or specialty pawn shops) and even then it's a crap shoot. The guys who do it professionally will outbid you on the good lockers and the ones you win are typically break even at best.

Anyone watch Horders? Especially the ones where the Hoards fill the houses and then go into storage units?

Went to a estate auction once. My mom scratched her nose and accidentally bid on an item.

I go to Estate Sales 2-6 times on a weekend. It's rare that I go 6 times, but it has happened. Of course, I live in Portland and they have a big recycling mentality. They have no sense of history or history of family like we do in the South. To them, it's just old used trash. They litterally haven't been around as long as us.
In Baton Rouge, you have anywhere from 0-5 estate sales a weekend. 1-2 usually. In Portland, I've never seen less than 8 on a weekend. They can get as high as 35 a week but usually they have around 20. So there are a lot of choices.
Antiquetiger scoffed at the number of Estate sales they have here in Portland. Go to Estatesale-finder.com and check out how many there are. That is a site that is dedicated to Estate sales in the Portland area only. And, that's not all the sales. Some estate sale companies are pissed at the guys who run that site and refuse to advertise there. That site will give you a general idea on the number of estate sales there are.
I have purchased a lot of fantastic things at Estate sales here in Portland. For instance, this week I have listed on ebay a Scrapbook from the 1908 Oregon vs Oregon State(OAC as it was known at that time) game. It has two Pennants, a program from the 1908 game, a ticket stub from the 1908 game, and other stuff. I bought that at an estate sale two weeks ago for $12. I estimate the entire thing will go for $600-$800. If that was an LSU scrapbook with that stuff from 1908 would go for 1,000's if not 10,000's.
If you wish to see those items, go to ebay and type in ebays search engine 1908 OSU. Most of the items will show up. Then hit on the right see other items. All 15 items will pop up. All those items were in the scrapbook.

I haven't been to an auction since late 1864/early 1865.
