Anyone here ever successfully negotiate buying a car via email?

This is only my second time going through the car buying process and I have a lot more time available than I did the first go around.
I would really prefer to not have to sit and talk to a bunch of salesmen on the phone or in person. Are there good deals to be had negotiating online?

Yes with Sewell in Houston. Awesome experience.

You afraid of confrontation?

Not really. I just hate salesmen. They're ranked right around bored housewives and elementary school teachers in the list of people I don't like being around.

Yes with Courtesy in Breaux Bridge.
All I had to do is show up with my trade, sign paperwork and drive off. It took me more time driving there than it did picking up my new truck

It depends how serious they think you are. They get piles upon piles of emails from people with no intention of buying anything just trying to get a low quote to use against their local dealer. If they feel like that's what you're doing they aren't going to work with you much. You'll have to go in person to get the best deal possible. If spending a couple bucks extra is worth avoiding the dealership bullshite (it is to many people), you'll probably have a good experience.

Am I weird for liking the negotiation process? I like pressing for the lowest price, then trying to get things thrown in with the car. And the feeling of control when you stall the process for a long time, then act unsatisfied and start to walk out, only to have the salesman run after you and give you what you want

It's awesome how the only people who like salesmen are salesmen

Nah. Since I've been working with some sales stuff, I like car shopping. Car salesmen are generally not very good salesmen.

I hate all of that.

I negotiated price, window tint, weather tech floor mats, spray on bed liner, roll n lock bed cover, leveling kit and locking lugs all via email.

The salesman I met at a dealership in Lafayette wasn't bad, actually. He wasn't super in my face about the whole deal, which I appreciated it. I also think it might make him a worse salesman, because he hasn't sent me the information that he said he'd send over 3 days ago.

The only way to actually get a good deal is wait until Dec. Otherwise, you will pay around what True Car list as the price. You are getting screwed regardless. You can go to a dealership that does large volume, and can have a better experience if you don't like salesman. They typically don't need your business, and are only interested in moving volume.

I've bought 3 online/email. Two from TX and one from FL.
Last one was in Beaumont at Philpott Toyota. Salesman offered me a very competitive price from the beginning. Drove over that afternoon. Was at the dealership for less than 30 minutes. It was awesome.

I bought my Jeep via text message. Only takes one on the phone at the beginning.

I do that. Just via email.
4Runner I bought in Miami the dude dropped the price $2300 just by me ignoring his emails for 3 days after we had a good discussion about the car

I've bought my last 4 or 5 cars via email. I just find every dealer within 500 miles that has the car I want and ask for their best price. Then start playing them against each other for their "real" best price. Just takes a couple days - they'll come down pretty quickly. I was surprised how easy and hassle free it was the first time I shopped online. And I've never had any unexpected surprises when I went to pick up the car.

Yeah, found one online for my wife, emailed an offer, went back and forth a few times, reached an agreement, filled out all the financing online, went after work to pick it up.
I don't mind doing it in person, but it was really easy to do from my office, plus it saved a lot of time once we got there.
