Anyone here ever downsize from a Suburban to a smaller SUV?

I have a friend, Mitch (not his real name), that is currently driving a Suburban. He loves the spaciousness of the Suburban, but is thinking about getting something smaller, easier to park and more fuel efficient.

He is afraid he will greatly miss the cargo space, especially when the third row seating is being used. (He has three kids).

He is looking at a Sequoia or Toyota minivan.

Has anyone here made this transition? Did you miss the cargo room?

Never personally switched, but I've found that I can fit just as much if not more shite into a minivan than into a full size SUV most of the time.

Mrs Cove moved from a Suburban to a Lexus SUV. She was happy, but I'm not sure if it was because one was better than the other; or if she was just happy I was buying her something new and shiny. As for cargo, she doesn't usually haul much around since she is married to a real man who drives a truck.

I had nothing but Suburbans for years. Was following his line of thinking and went to a smaller SUV and now a sedan. MAJOR MISTAKE. I am going back to a Suburban as soon as the new model year comes out.* But I rent mini-vans for travel all the time and they are great IF you don't mind driving one all over town. Just something about pulling up to Ruth's Chris with a date and hopping out of a mini van that doesn't sit right with me.

*There are some issues with the current model year that I have heard will be addressed in the next model.

Does 3 kids mandate that the 3rd row seating be used? Unless the other SUV has bucket seats in the 2nd row, he doesn't have to use the 3rd row. Outside of a Yukon/Tahoe, I'm not really sure if any smaller SUV even offers bucket seats for the 2nd row, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Yes. And I thought it was all BS internet rumors until my buddy had to duct tape his side trim down when it almost came off on a trip. It looks like they have traced the issue to the overlay trim pieces that run between the front and back windows. They come away under speed and smack against the side of the car rapidly producing a vibration inside the cabin. On his truck you can look in the mirrors at highway speeds and see them moving.

The wife had a Tahoe which was awesome. Her mother could no longer get in it and she downsized to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Good SUV but, too darn small! It's not comfortable to take any type of trip in.

We've said many times that we really miss the Tahoe.

You went from a Suburban to an SUV and hated it so much you went down to a sedan?

I have had a suburban before but switched to a Land Cruiser, then a Lexus LX. I can't move my apartment in one trip with the LX like I could with the suburban, but overall I am pleased and still have enough cargo room.

the cargo room when using the third row in almost any vehicle other than a suburban, is minimal.

The smaller SUV was a lease and that car brand didn't have any other SUV's. I thought I would like a sedan for a change since the mid-size SUV was pretty much worthless for carrying cargo anyway. Just waiting out the lease period so I can go back to the Suburban.

And hold off on the "leasing is stupid" stuff. I own a business and the lease makes sense for tax purposes.
