Have a 10 and 8 year old and we haven’t made the plunge to get a dog yet. I’m leaning towards a dog but the kids are asking about a guinea pig.

Went to Petsmart today and it sounds like a lot of work and upkeep.

If I’m going to spend the monthly maintenance and costs for hay, cage stuffing, and food, why not just get a dog.

Anyone have any feedback on maintenance and if they are a pain in the arse or not?

Curious what difference would be between getting 1or 2 guinea pigs vs adopting a dog. Btw we want to adopt a younger dog, not a puppy.

Get a dog. You'll enjoy a dog more than a guinea pig.

I owned a ferret one time. Never again. That shite was 10x more work than having a dog.

My fiancée has a pair, they are social critters so they do better in pairs (make sure they are both fixed). She had a large wire dog crate as a cage for them, setup on a folding table before recently getting a bigger cage designed for guinea pigs. She uses puppy training pads as the floor liner with timothy hay and pine flake shavings as bedding. Rolls up and replaces the whole bedding every 5 days. She definitely takes extremely good care of them, the one she had when I first met her lived for 7 years and the two she has now are almost 5 and are still very active and healthy.

You don’t want rodent in your house. What to really need to do is get your child a pellet gun and tell them to hunt squirrels/birds around the neighborhood. It will teach them about nature and improve their aim.

We have two Guinea pigs, and they are not that bad. Cleaning the cage sucks compared to opening the door to let my dog out when she ask to go out. My opinion is get the dog. I'am sure you already know this, but you can add the dog to the list of kids and things you and the wife need to take care of. The wife and I are currently taking care of our kids seven year old dog. I love animals, so it is not a problem. If you go on a lot of vacations, it can be a problem. Good luck.

guinea pig.

My sister(no pics) had one when we were growing up. That thing shite more than anything I had ever seen. Seriously. I had no idea so much shite could come from such a small animal.

Why not a small dog like a dachshund?

I had several guineas the past few years before I gave them away. They weren’t that bad. Had to clean out their cage about once a week and fed them daily. They loved celery sticks and carrots so feeding them is easy. As long I stayed on top of their cage cleaning it was never too gross.

Not sure how discipline your kid is but kids lose interest in pets pretty quick and it'll become your responsibility. My $.02 is get the critter that has the shortest life span so you can use that for when the kids want other pets. Or get a dog that you would personally want. Dogs can serve a purpose and bring you more joy. You're only going to see guinea pigs and hamsters as maintenance animals with no enjoyment.

Also, guinea pigs whistle when excited so they can be noisy.

I had 2 hamsters as a kid. Herman slipped up and knocked up Gertrude. After Gertrude had her babies she ate Herman's head off. Then a few days later she killed all her babies, we got rid of Gertrude after that.

Set a trap and catch a nutria. I’ve seen some threads on this board about raising them.
