I did an addition a couple of years ago. Added a family room and master with a courtyard in the middle.

My architect suggested mini-split AC units in each wing. I wasn’t wild about it and then my builder also suggested them. They were both signing the same song....super effiecient, latest and greatest, high end, etc. So based on each of their recommendations I installed 2 Lennox units.

They have been a pain in the arse since day 1. Between the two units they have leaked because of clogged drain pan, kinked drain line, and Freon leak. Those are what was diagnosed. I thought we had the problems diagnosed or fixed and I was doing regular maintenance. Now, in the last two weeks they have each leaked with what I guess is condensation? It has been hot has hell in AL and when I turn them off for a little while the leaking seems to stop for a few days.

The worst part is I can’t bite the bullet and just go with central because the additions each have vaulted ceilings and spray foam insulation so it’s not like I can just run duct work. So now I have these 2 units that I’m scared to leave running and we have hardwoods and pictures under them making the potential damage worse.

My question is anyone else have these problems with mini splits? Are the Lennox ones just crap? Is there some maintenance I am missing?

My parents have had one for over a decade with no problems you wouldn't expect from an AC unit in that time frame. You may have just had terrible luck with them or an AC guy that doesnt know what he's doing.

I mostly deal with the Mitsubishi brand but I know on the Freon lines they have those flare fittings instead of solder fittings. They always have leaks unless you torque them and put oil on the face of the fitting. They require a little more detail on installing them than ppl think but they good units.

Mine are not on exterior walls so the drain lines are somewhat long. Could that be causing a problem?

Hate to hear this, as I generally think they are the coolest things ever. I was looking at one outside of my hotel just a few minutes ago and you literally could not hear the thing running.

Hope you get your troubles straightened out...

They are great units. But Lennox has went down the shitter past 5-6 yrs.

Friends don't let friends have Lennox ACs

As long as you have downward slope and no kinks in the line you should be good the length.

Drain lines/problems are by far the #1 complaint with them.

As mentioned, they do take a little more attention for the install, so maybe you have an installation issue.

I’ve heard good things about Mitsubishi and that’s what I plan to get for my bonus room, but I would have expected the Lennox unit to be pretty good.

You had bad installation. Lennox are good units that shouldn't be giving you those headaches. Personally, I'd call Lennox and explain your dissatisfaction. Just an FYI, mini-splits have been used everywhere but the US for a long time for a reason.

What size are the wall penetrations for these? I’m putting my house plan together and want to rough in to put one in my garage shop in the future.

Why, they have went downhill in a blaze past 5-6 yrs. Hundreds of thousands had new Lennox units have leaky evaporator coils less than 3 yrs old. Lawsuit happened and ended in 2016. Instead of putting a recall or get rid of the huge stockpile of coils they had made in Mexico, they simply gave those people new coil but same poor quality. They continued to build new units with those coils as well. As a result, another lawsuit has just been filed.

People have had blower issues, heat ignition issues all in new installs less than 2 yrs.

Ask any AC guy that's reputable and whats the #1 AC they work on the most. Lennox was up there next to Trane, but they have drastically fallen. I would put in any other brand other than Lennox

I have (2) 4 ton Mitsubishi Mr Slim units... Going on 7 years not a single problem. Warranty is about to run out and I just posted this, so now tempting fate lol.

If I ever build another house, I will definitely use them again. Incredibly quiet, and with the variable speed compressor, run only as hard as needed.
