I volunteered a few times to help work the local annual balloon fest. I can say that for 99% of them, it was an expensive hobby they love, that can be partially subsidized with paying customers.

They have tethered rides at Tulip Festival out here. Pretty much the same model you're talking about:

Tulip Fest

I've also been to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. It's cool, but I would never go up in an untethered one. There are way too many power lines in this world.

If I got a permit to attach it near the Riverwalk, The rides would be over the Mississippi I assume for the most part depending on wind.
What would the background for the selfies be? Muddy water?

Put a cell phone store near the launch/landing area to sell replacements to the balloon customers who drop theirs while taking selfies.

Baton Rouge had a balloon festival in 1989. This happened, and the video on TV made me never want to ride in one.

quote:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ A balloonist who was killed when his aging hot air balloon collapsed and plummeted to the ground before a crowd of thousands radioed his wife in his final seconds to warn spectators away.

Robert Mock, 52, of Paonia, Colo., died Saturday when his balloon fell 2,000 feet and crashed during the National Hot Air Balloon Championships. Mock called on the radio before the 5:55 p.m. crash to say a flap near the top of the balloon wasn’t sealing properly, said his wife, Charlene.

?Bob called me on his aircraft radio and he said the Chariot of Fire was having trouble,? Mrs. Mock said. ?He said, ‘It doesn’t look good.’ And I didn’t bother him,? she said. A short time later, she related, ?he said, ’Clear the people out from underneath.?

***
Mock’s balloon collapsed in the air and dropped from the sky as flames spewed from the gas burner normally used to control its altitude.

A witness, Southern University professor Moriba A. Karamoko, said Mock continued to work the butane burner controls in an apparent effort to reinflate the craft as it fell.

?He was a lot more in control than I would have been,? Karamoko said.

Birk said Mock apparently shut down his burners about 75 feet above the ground to prevent the gas cylinders from exploding on impact.

Mrs. Mock said her husband took up ballooning less than two years ago after a 20-year career as a cropduster.

Saw that balloonist go down in person as a kid. Hot air balloon festival was always a good time (except that time).

There’s a very, very easy solution for that...

Since it seems you know little to nothing about flying a hot air balloon or what it might take to take passengers as a business, the most obvious answer is if you can buy a hot air balloon for $5k, and they cost around $30-40k, buy it and flip it.

I've done the passenger trips offered here in Central Florida -- lame.

For 2 weeks I worked near an airport that did hot air balloon rides and after watching that, there's no way I'd go up in one of those things.

The term "golden shower" would take on a whole new meaning

Some time in the 90’s a buddy and I were driving around the LSU lakes smoking a joint before a football game when we saw a hot air balloon descending as if it was going to land in the lake. We got to them just as the balloon’s basket slammed into the bank and tossed the pilot and passenger out into the grass.

After helping the pilot pull the basket away from the lake and getting the balloon flattened out we realized that the passenger, who didn’t help us at all btw, was none other than Leo Honeycutt. Leo didn’t even thank us for the help.

About 7-8 years ago a balloon carrying a wedding party crashed into hi powered power lines and 1-12 died. Operator had lots of experience, but decided poorly

I came in here hoping you simply forgot to add NSFW to the thread title. But nope, this thread sucks.
