what's the need to live in a mansion? Convincing people of small incomes to hand you their cash while you live a luxurious life doesn't seem like Christian values.

Some people want their preacher to live better than them. It's a sign that God is rewarding him. They're happy to contribute so he can have a nice car, a big house, etc.

Mid way in his prime, I saw he & his wife at a restaurant here in town & he was dressed as usual in a expensive suit, silk shirt/tie, a very nice Rolex on his finger; his wife was in skin tight black leather pants, silk blouse & matching leather vest. Jewelry hanging from her neck & both wrists. And they were both having a great time with the wine.

Bunch of interesting comments in this thread. I personally know each of the grandkids although its been years since I've communicated with any of them. I also know a lot people who went to school and/or church over the years.

There are a lot of faults to find with how they operate and I don't agree with some of what "they do", but I will say Jimmy is probably the best bible scholar alive today and I give them credit for preaching the bible pretty straight and narrow. Might not be yalls thing but with some of the absolutely crazy stuff out there masquerading as "church" I'm still glad someone preaches biblical faith and values.

Last, I can't attest for what happened decades ago but anyone who says they have seen him drinking is probably lying, he may have issues but I've never heard of him or his wife (or most of the family with one exception) ever drinking.

I don't know why you people are so down on Brother Swaggart.

On balance he's probably created much more good than bad, helping people get through this life and making a living from doing it. Just like everyone here. You play to your strengths and get paid.

Really? Its one thing to make a living with a passion to help others, its another thing to create a platform for begging for money, make millions and along the way help a few naive people in order to keep his rep going.

People send money to drug dealers for crack (well these days I guess heroin would be more appropriate) in order to feel good. Many drug dealers use some of the money they make to fund things that help people. But they go to jail for it.

Never heard of this but wouldn't shock me if she actually did or still does.

And evidently the bible forbids females to spread the word.

quote:

1 Timothy 2:11-15 ESV / 104 helpful votes

Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

He's a con artist and a shister. But he's good enough at it that it does not consume him.

But generally people will believe what they want to believe, People looking for something will convince themselves that they have found it in him.

I went to his church once just to get a feel for what he was doing. It was interesting. He's charismatic and people were catching the Holy Spirit.
I kinda feel sorry for the guy. I mean, that half-built dorm was up for decades. How would you like to see an actual physical manifestation of a huge personal failing every day on your way to work?

is she the one that told a cancer patient "don't waste your money on treatment, send it to me and I will heal you"?

You got me there, I don't really know, but I wouldn't be surprised.

This is her net worth.

Very true. They give people an incredible misunderstanding of Jesus Christ. People need to remember that Jesus lived the opposite of these greedy, selfish con artists. Pastors are expected by God to live modest lives and not to live lavishly.

Even more harrowing is the case of Bonnie Parker, who, instead of seeking treatment for cancer, was convinced to “sow” money into Copeland’s church due to the ministry’s teaching. After Parker died in 2004 from cancer, her daughter, Kristy Beach, claimed to have found her mother’s diaries that detailed the words she heard on TV from Kenneth and Gloria Copeland.
“If she went to a doctor, it was a sin,” Beach told the AP. “You didn’t believe enough if you did. She just wrote: ‘God heal me. God heal me. God heal me.’”

Oliver then played a video of Gloria Copeland, who hawks a series of “healing faith” products, suggesting to her congregation that it’s better to pray then to seek medical treatment for cancer.
“We know what’s wrong with you—you’ve got cancer,” preached Copeland. “The bad news is we don’t know what to do about it except give you some poison that will make you sicker. Now, which do you want to do: do you want to do that, or do you want to sit here on Saturday morning, hear the word of God, and let faith come into your heart and be healed? Hallelujah.”

I grew up with people very close to the Swaggart Ministries. God has nothing to do with it.

Incidentally, his reputation in the US never fully recovered from being caught with his pants down, (Literally) But it's amazing how the people outside of the US love the man.
