My wife applied for a graphic design job there. They requested all sorts of religious info in the app. Are you saved? What is your ministers name. How often do you attend church.
Apparently it's OK for them to ask that. I think she was lost the job when she exed out minister and wrote priest.

It's exactly the same as a restaurant preying on the hungry. Or a contractor preying on people wanting something built.
You see what your market wants, provide it well enough to earn repeat business and you earn a living.
uhhh....the examples above, a person pays money to receive a product or service. That isn't preying upon anyone.
Those businesses also pay taxes. Swag and his ilk run corporations that masquerade as not for profits.

also
restaurants are clearly engaged in making profits
christian churches preach a gospel that is anti-wealth

It doesn't matter what happens to the money. The customer is happy.
Churches have to make a "profit" to keep the lights on, grow and pay for things. It may not be an IRS taxable profit, but it is an excess over expenses, if they are to remain open for business.

I mean the guy does have his radio station playing all over the world.... I guess some call it greed.... Seems like the kingdom advances to me.
I've listened to a few of his sermons. Can't disagree with his view on things.

In the early 80s, before his fall from grace, I unloaded trucks for UPS. We would do two to three eighteen wheeler trailers every morning. At times a good quarter of what we unloaded was Jimmy Swaggart tapes coming back from TV stations all over the world.

You're going to have to help me along with this one. I don't get the point. I can be slow at times.

what's the need to live in a mansion? Convincing people of small incomes to hand you their cash while you live a luxurious life doesn't seem like Christian values.

He can be a great evangelical entertainer and sometimes a musician but his world view is bizarre at times.

Yeah it's not my place to judge but I think personally I'd keep it simple. I've never asked a pastor what their opinion is on church funded housing for themselves. It would promise to be an interesting conversation for sure.

I'm more disagreeing with claiming that restaurants are "preying" upon the hungry.
Comparing a con man to legitimate businesses is just a poor comparison. I mean congrats to Jimmy for preying upon morons and exposing tax loop holes to his advantage, but he's not someone I choose to respect or admire.

Agree he is not someone I choose to put as a role model but he doesn't to force people to send money.
And maybe that's the con part for you. I tend to think they willingly decide to send $$$ to buy salvation as you willingly go somewhere to eat and spend $$$ for lunch.

To buy salvation? You don't understand the principle of tithing, and I don't mean that in an offensive way. Most people don't understand it.
Put simply, you cannot love both Jesus and money. Eventually you reach a point where money doesn't matter much to you at all.

Their people ended up in Ferriday after they got displaced off the small family farm by the agrarian mechanization of the 1910s & 1920s. Before tractors and combines, using horses & mules, a couple of acres of crops anually was all a farmer (and his family) could handle. In twenty years using new technology, farmer's productivity increased ten-fold. That meant prices for the commodities they produced went down and then a bunch of small farms and farmers (Swaggart, Lewis and Gilley's forebearers included) were no longer economically viable. They had to sell out or they simply walked away from mortgaged farmland and went to the towns or cities.
There used to be abandoned farmhouses all over the place in rural Louisiana. People would just walk away, like you say. My grandfather used to explore these places and would find all kinds of stuff. Furniture, books, you name it. He found a diamond ring once. They're all gone now, fallen down or torn down.

That isn't how any of this works.
quote:
It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Saying that he is just a businessman that fills a role is like saying that chop shop financial brokerage firms like Stratton Oakmont are just providing a service. Both are using dishonest methods to fleece people out of their money. Both are motivated by personal enrichment at any cost. It is justifying a thief.
There's a moral way to conduct business in which one party honestly represents their product and a transaction takes place between two adults. Then there's what people like Swaggart do which is representing a business as a charity and taking advantage of tax loopholes.
I think the implication of what you are saying is that it is impossible to have unethical business practices, which is absurd.
