What type and what did it cost?

Custom built safe room up

Below ground in garage?

One piece modular above ground?

Other options include: Outdoor buried units and basements (for places with less rain). Seems like the first one would be the nicest place to ride out an evening of storms.

We have a concrete room built into our foundation in the basement. Most of the room is backed up to solid ground. The walls on either side of the door are thick walls of rebar reinforced concrete. The front porch is above it, which is concrete with metal under the concrete and a steel bar under that to keep it from collapsing. Then a heavy duty door.

If I were building a house today and could do whatever I wanted with regards to a storm shelter, I would probably get one of those that is in the floor of the foundation.

Yeah. Seems like the most useful option, but it would be quite damp in a lot of the tornado states.

Thar top one is similar to what my neighbors/friends did when they built an addition on their house. Their's is a walk-in closet that you can't even tell is a safe room. They did the majority of the work themselves and built it using FEMA plans. I don't know the cost as it was rolled into the addition.

That is 100% the way I would go if building or expanding a home.

No, baw. The life lesson we learned in elementary school was to sit in the hallway and put our hands and arms on top of our heads and we would be ok.

I know some people that did an addition and built a small room like that. They put a bed into it and can just go in there and chill/watch TV while the storms pass instead of hiding under the stairs like everyone else.

I would prolly go with the third option. A solid steel room bolted to the garage floor. They are certified for EF5's.

They have the advantage of not trapping you underground. I don't want my shelter to be my tomb.

My great uncle had one. My great aunt said she'd take her chances with a tornado than get in there with the snakes.

We built our house in 2015 and we wanted a safe room….not only for tornadoes but also as a place of refuge from bad guys for my wife for those times I’m out of town. She doesn’t like to handle guns.

We considered our options and decided to make our large sized walk in master closet the safe room using the the first concept shown in the OP. Tied to the slab, reinforced, concrete filled cinder blocks for walls, reinforced concrete slab for the ceiling, and a 4 dead bolt heavy steel door with a metal door jamb. Furring strips were used to install drywall so it looks like any other closet. The heavy steel door stays open against the wall and we use a pocket door for every day use. The master closet is more convenient for the night time tornadoes and as a place of refuge for my wife. Also, the closet is just full of clothes for extra protection. We have a basket with a flashlight, batteries, water bottles, whistle, etc.

The safe room in the garage floor didn’t seem to be a good option for various reasons.

Never understood the garage floor shelters. Here comes a tornado, let me back out the car first.

No... tornadoes aren't a huge threat here, but if I was building a new house I probably would have one in the design.

We have a basement.
But, it's a daylight basement with one side open to ground level.
Basements are not full replacement for a safe room, and I imagine a daylight one is even less a perfect place to be in the event of a EF5

I think I would have to move if this was one of my fears.

Our master bath shower has three exterior and interior walls between the center and outside. That’s the shelter for us and we hope we never need it
