Yes. My son is 11 and has been wrestling for 7 years here in PA. Here are the rules in our house regarding wrestling in order:

1. Wear headgear. Always. I don't care if the other kids aren't wearing it. No excuse not to.
2. Wrestling shoes are for the mat only. Never wear them anywhere else.
3. Don't quit
4. Have fun
5. Train hard. It's an individual sport so you only get out of if what you put into it

We are fortunate that where we live in PA there are clubs practicing every day of the week so there are lots of opportunities.

It's a great sport that teaches the best life lessons.

Also, he's been wrestling at least 5 days a week if not more since July and (knock on wood) not one case of COVID that we know about. Wrestler's, generally speaking, have GREAT immune systems. He has had ringworm before one but nothing else.

I grew up in the epicenter of American wrasslin. I loved it in PeeWee, but the first time rolled into a large meet and got my shite pushed in by a physically superior cat who seemed 25% bigger, but weighed the same, I decided to retire.

Those boys are some demented fricks. Prepare for your kid to ruin his ears and develop a penchant for eating inedible objects to curb hunger.

taking pills to lose an extra pound

I'm not saying you didn't see this happen but I live in probably the top wrestling area in the country and personally know state champions and I've never heard of anyone taking speed for weight loss for wrestling. If this ever happened and got out here, the wrestler and/or coach or parent would be ostracized.

Now, running and fasting for a day or two, yes, this happens no doubt. Once could argue that this is not any healthier than pills but some others would. I'm not here to debate this.

Bruh, I lived with a few all Americans in Iowa. The commitment to the cause is a commitment to suffering.

Nope my son played soccer as his only sport from 8-12. He enjoyed it, mostly...I think.

Wrestling is the greatest sport. Your son will learn many life lessons. Tell him to stick with it and to get as much mat time as he can.

“Speed”? have you never heard of an ECA stack? It’s common among lifters and athletes

You can expect cauliflower ears in the end.

Nobody even knew what jiu jitsu was when I was wrestling. Now, I’d probably enroll my kid in BJJ. You get all the same attributes, character building and life lessons of wrestling, but BJJ is more technical and efficient. The best BJJ guy will beat the best wrestler. BJJ teaches you how not only to control and finish a fight from a dominant position, it teaches you how to finish a fighter and win from what looks like a weak or losing position.

Lol that last about two months. The wrestlers already have 75% of the balance, base, and leverage you need. They just don’t know not to extend arms or how protect their collar when they start. Once they learn some fundamentals like elbows tight and in, posture in guard, etc they become beast. It doesn’t take long for them to get decent if they decide to cross train.

Common misconception. You only get cauliflower ear when you do NOT wear headgear and the ears are exposed. I wrestled from the 5th grade to my Senior year in HS and was a State Champion. My coach made it mandatory to wear headgear at all times. I never had C-ear nor did any of my teammates.

I wrestled 5 years in high school wrestling and we had a very strong team atmosphere. Won multiple state championships and those were goal. Individual championships were great but we were definitely a team. Many friendships still active after 35 years.

Brother Martin ? If you wrestled for Coach Charbonneau, that dude was a crazy disciplinarian, demanded the utmost respect, and his wrestlers/teams dominated in the mid 80's.

Not many wrestling gyms/schools in Louisiana, especially at that age.

There's 6 in the New Orleans metro area alone...

My kid, who's 11, wrestled a kid from Brusly, N. Desoto, and BR in his last tournament...

It's a great sport. The tournaments can make for long days, and it's crazy if you drive far and your kid gets beat and is done early.

I'd just really make practice fun, and wrestle locally. Make sure he gets an extremely good bath after practice, b/c staph and ringworm are a deal.

There will be crazy dads who care about their kids weight way to young.

All that being said, it's an awesome sport!! Seeing your kid compete one on one is amazing, and how he handles both wins and losses are fun two watch.

I don't have kids in it, but i was a wrestler growing up and wrestled a year at a D2 school in college. Its the greatest sport there is in my opinion. Your kid is obviously an alpha, congrats!

Very true. I have been in jits for about 13 years now. Wrestlers are hands down the best students for actually picking up the techniques and applying them since like you said, they already know the fundamentals. Plus, the biggest hurdle for most new students is the gas tank and wrestlers already have that coming in.

In fact my son wrestled in high school and some in college as a Heavy (he was a D-lineman in football) and he can absolutely crush me on the mat and he never really got into BJJ but was a beast as a wrestler.

Not many public high school wrestling teams outside of the big metro areas. It's grown just like BJJ since the UFC has started. Not sure why the down votes. I live between Nola and BR and there's not many private wrestling gyms teaching kids how to wrestle outside of school.
