Well that sucks. I still laugh like a crazy person every time I watch the elephant story.

That's one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Carol Burnett's face as Conway starts to go off-script is priceless.

Carol Burnett Show outtakes - Tim Conway's Elephant Story

For those of you who might have been born too late to really see Conway's genius, the most amazing thing about that is that he's the only one who knows what he's going to do. He'd rehearse on script and when they went to tape, they'd do two performances of all the skits live-to-tape in front of a studio audience. They didn't do take after take to get it right. If at least one of the two performances wasn't usable, it just didn't make the show that week, very similar to how SNL does it (except funny). If the first performance on script was good and they could use it in the show, he'd sometimes just start ad-libbing in the second performance with the singular goal of breaking the rest of the cast and you'd get something amazing, like siamese elephants joined at the trunk, or a nervous dentist.

Harvey Korman always had trouble keeping a straight face with him. RIP. Tim.
