re: Anyone Feel Like College Students Are Coddled These Days?

A Doctor can write a script for a student to have a “therapeutic pet” like an anxiety dog, and the college campus has to honor the script even if it’s in a dorm on campus. Let that sink in.

Another thing that shocked me was how, where I work at least, is if something goes wrong and the student doesn't graduate on time, it's primarily the advisor's fault as opposed to the student's fault. Of course, an advisor has a responsibility to give students correct information, but I know was in undergrad, I was constantly checking my degree progress to make sure I was getting my education done in a timely manner, along with working hard to make sure my classes went well.
When I was a senior I had to do this mandatory conference with my advisor (I didn't even know I had one). They were shocked that I was set to graduate and had never asked them for help. I said I was shocked that someone who thought they were worthy of a college education could make a mistake on something so simple. The advisor ws not pleased.
Also, for a free story, the advisor told me that I didn't look like someone who was about to graduate with honors prior to the above conversation. Worthless idiot.

College 2008-2011, law school 2011-2014, currently work in corporate transactional law. I remember some “character” professors (Kerry Sauley!), but can honestly say very little of what I learned in higher ed was useful, memorable, or relevant to my career. Of the ~$80k I spent at LSU, I really don’t think I got my money’s worth. The majority of my education came from good parents and learning on the job. If I was an 18 year old now, I would absolutely not go down the same path.
Maybe I just did college/law school totally wrong haha
College isn't supposed to be employment prep and that's where things "went wrong". It's created this terrible atmosphere and absurd pricing. I suspect that the exponential increase in female enrollment has something to do with it. You're going to face a different paradigm when 60% of your student body is now female compared to 50/50 20-30 years ago. I was thinking about this yesterday when reading the "luxury condo" thread. I think that shift is 100% tracking the changing gender of the population.

You're proof that the system has failed.
I went to college for the education and I was a poor kid when going there. I also remember tons I learned in college.

I recall an advisor telling me Acting 1001 counted as my 3 hrs of Arts requirement. Fun class. Come time to graduate and it didn’t. Had to take one last semester of Fine Arts Survey, so yeah advisors don’t know stuff either.

I actually haven't seen grade inflation yet at my school. At least not yet. What I have seen are far too many students who aren't putting in the work to succeed and aren't seeking out a resource, like tutoring, to help.
But, you definitely hit the nail on the head where if you provide too little or too much, you have the chance of getting the blame.

Rich parents pay for their daughters to stay in nice apartments well into their 20s let alone college.
I’ve met multiple girls in Houston making 50-70k but living in $2000 month apartments.

It was pretty easy following a flowchart of degree requirements.
Yes, that's the thing. There's a flowcharts at my school saying exactly what you have to take and exactly what the pre-reqs and/or co-reqs are. The requirements to graduate beyond the major shouldn't be a mystery either, it's all easily accessible if you take a minute to look. Of course, advisors can give helpful advice too and can help structure schedules for students, but a lot of students seem fairly clueless on what they need to be doing.
And to the other poster who asked, I'm an academic advisor.

You took a job at a college and you're complaining about college students. Maybe you took the wrong job.

My cousin (she married a CEO, probably met through this endeavor) used to do interior decorating and event planning for college age kids who's parents spent a fortune on them. its unbelievable what some parents spend on princess so she can feel special.
I don't think that has ever changed though, and its certainly not new.

The coddling thing extends well past college

Correct. I play golf with a guy that still pays his son’s cell phone bill. The kid is 25 and is making $175k-$200k as some kind of engineer in west Texas.

Its pretty much the only reason I went.
I remember a hell of a lot from college but I took stuff I was interested in. It is what you make of it.
Over half the kids in college will end up working in some field other than their major anyway. People have to stop viewing college as solely a qualification for a job. If you're resourceful, you'll find your way regardless.

I just do not get it. I know some trust funders but they all moved to big metro areas and were teachers so their family helped support them so they didn't live in squalor, but I don't know of any rich friends with high paying jobs whose parents still pay their bills.

More common with cell phone plans, and such.
Paying for an apartment is a whole different level.
