I work in sales. I pretty much take my job as a day to day basis. Could go to work Monday and find myself without a job for any number of reasons.

Heard a couple bad rumors this week. Seems we may shut the doors or get bought out. Either way I'm worried as frick.

Not me personally but I spent 8 hours yesterday identifying depreciating assets that could be released and/or had been released and not updated in the system to help save people's jobs. Two highest costs in my business are depreciation and personnel. I hope we were able to come up with enough depreciation cost reductions to save jobs. It never gets easier laying off and/or firing workers.

You won't be alone. Q1 in O&G won't be pretty.

You must work at Taco Bell. When you get into the real world, sometimes being the best still won't save a position. There are lots of very good engineers and project managers out of work right now.

I've been told that I'm 'okay' for the time being, but it's hard to rely on assurances like that when oil prices are falling every day. I've seen really good people get let go of recently and it only adds to the anxiety when you realize who they are, really bright engineers, accountants, directors, senior managers, etc. obviously I realize that companies have to go through this process when things are lean, a part of why we had jobs in the first place was that things were going so well in o&g...now the very opposite is happening.

heck, I went out to our houma branch plant last week, and they'd laid off nearly 40% of their workforce, with another 25-30% coming in Q1. you could sense the dire and desperation in those folks, they're scared as frick.

scary times in o&g...afraid it's only to get worse.

I was referencing people who are getting fired.

There is a diff in people getting laid off because of the market and they are doing huge cuts. I get that.

My statement isn't wrong. It's funny how people try to throw out working at Taco Bell or McDonalds as an insult. Guess what? Those people have a job while these smug Oil and Gas people are out of work.

Yep, most companies simply look at numbers. Not too much on ability. They all will come up with some arbitrary number for a certain size facility.
A bank needs X number of managers and Y number of tellers ( regardless of how busy it is or talent level), An accounting firm needs X number of accountants per certain size project, etc.
Also mix in the "across the board cuts", losing people by attrition that aren't replaced, have the lazy employees milk the FMLA laws, people go out on maternity leave, etc.

I am blessed to work for such a great company and the direct group of people I see everyday... It seems I spend more time with them than I do my own family and its pretty cool to be in a decent mood going to work everyday... I have been in a spot that it was just awful getting up knowing I have to go to work with those crappy people and conditions.....

There was no insult meant, sorry if you took it that way. When you work in retail or fast food and you lose your job, you go across the street to the next establishment. When you work in an industry that's struggling, you don't have easy options. It's recently happened in the auto industry, banking industry, and now O&G. No one is smug, that's a silly statement. It's tough times, and trivializing it by saying be a better employee only demonstrates your lack of understanding.
