And you said Houston is a better city, which couldn't be further from the truth.
Houston has some positive attributes that L.A. doesn't have:
really nice people
safe affordable neighborhoods
areas with great public schools
I was more saying the L.A. has the downsides of all of those metro areas with few of the upsides.
The only good things about L.A. is:
great food
unbelievably great weather
lots of jobs
beaches
hot women
endless entertainment options
Which are all really great things. But the negatives are pretty glaring too:
Hilariously incompetent government
endemic crime
bad schools
unaffordable housing stock
massive sprawl
hideous traffic
outright terrible people (like New York area bad)
bland architecture (strip mall city)
natural disasters like mudslides, earthquakes, and forest fires.
For some, the drawbacks outweight the benefits. For others, the inverse is true just like with any city.
I didn't like it. I feel like there are far better places in So Cal that have most of the same advantages with far fewer downsides.
It has San Francisco's insane housing prices, smog, and crazy liberal wackadoo's.
It has New York City's f&%k you personalities and atrocious public schools.
It has Houston's sprawl, traffic, lack of walkability, and bland architecture.
It has Miami's insane consumerist and drug culture.

Buy an RV and find a place to park it near your work. On your time off, drive it to awesome outdoor spots that Cali has to offer.
That's actually not retarded. I would do this if I were you OP.

i didn't ask his reasons, just said real estate was insanely expensive

OP you better double up on your fuel budget too. Since you are unlikely to find something reasonably priced in the area you will be working you should plan on commuting. Average price per gallon is $4.30 right now.

I know someone who does this in Baton Rouge and it's really not a bad way to go. I bet it would really pay off in a place like L.A. where the housing savings would be far higher, and you can drive to Redwoods, Big Sur, Sequoia, Yosemite, etc in a day.

It's a city where you HAVE to have a car to get around.
Find a small bungalow around Santa Monica for $400k and you will be happy.

I know some people who have done this north of LA.

You can share a 3 bedroom apt with a couple of mexican families.

I was downtown mostly out there.
L.A. is massive and different areas have different atmospheres.
UCLA area is very pricey.
Look at the neighborhoods south of I-10 from there.

apparently people in Los Angeles spend 80 more hours in a car commuting than any other place in the country

Watts and Compton are nice areas.

Holds its value, won't be house poor, can drive and see some cool shite. I'd rather that than burning my money on rent or a shite house.

Honestly I can't believe you accepted this job without researching any of this. You might want to rethink your decision.

Been here in Los Angeles for the past 8 years. I'm in Beverly Park and it's okay. Little too crowded for my taste.
Restaurants are underrated. Women are decent.

Our budget for a home would be 300-400k, and frankly that's a generous budget and only that high because it has to be. We will probably have to rent, because I'm not sure if we can find a place in a nice neighborhood with that budget.
You can't.

So you wouldn't say that both cities have positive attributes the other lacks?
Where can you find a house for less than $300k in a safe neighborhood with great public schools near enough to L.A. to commute into town? That straight up doesn't exist there.
