I'll be moving back to the US in about a year or so, and I'm trying to decide where I'd like to end-up. Recently I've been thinking about Phoenix.

I used to visit Scottsdale back in the day when I had a buddy in the minors, but I've never really spent much time in Phoenix. I'm currently living in Kuwait, and before this I was in Oman so I don't think the heat will be much of an issue. I loved living in Oman because of how much there was to do outdoors with all of the hiking and activities.

Phoenix seems like a fairly similar place but with a big enough sized city. In doing some initial research on it, it also seems very reasonable from a cost-of-living standpoint.

Anyone ever lived there? Thoughts on what it's like? Seems everyone has visited or flown through there, but Idk anyone who's actually lived in Phoenix. TIA !

Yes, for two years. It is hot, dry, desert, hot as in 113 - 122,
I have friends who love it and hate it. I would not move back.

I mean if you like living in the same state as LSUnurse and LSU480 it maybe ok but hard pass from me. Actually I may reconsider it because they do have that cool car show annually. Ok I changed my mind it's a go from me.

Shitty traffic
Great hiking
Great bar/happy hour scene
ASU sloots, 20-30 something Midwestern and southern sloots, and cougars everywhere
Bros everywhere
Sunny 360 days a year
Best weather in America from November to February (except this February)
100° at midnight for 2 months a year
Cheap flights anywhere from PHX
Expensive real estate in the best zip codes
Cheap real estate in zip codes next door
People in general laid back
All 4 professional sports
Shitty traffic
Great place to live if in your 20s-30s and single

No, no one has ever lived there. It's a ghost town.

It's this for 4 months a year in Kuwait so only 2 months is a hell of an upgrade ha!

I have noticed this, wonder why that is?

I could definitely see the real estate being fairly tricky in this sort of city. I imagine it's very pocketed.

I stayed there about 45 years ago, so no current information. It was great back then - steak houses were legit, no seafood to speak of though, ASU chicks liked to party, lots of bars, strip clubs were basically bikini bars, not much grass or greenery but lots of cactus and other desert plants.

I lived there about 10yrs ago. Hot as frick in the summer but overall a decent place to live. Plenty of hiking and outdoorsy things to do.

I’ve heard it’s hot there, but how is it compared to southern Louisiana in August/September with 100% humidity?

Also, I keep seeing ‘kidnapping capital of the US’ is this true, are normal adults/kids getting taken on a daily/weekly basis?

Scottsdale and Arizona in general is my favorite State.

Ton to do, weather is amazing. Great hunting, fishing and you get desert, mountains and forest.

Everything else is spot on. But there is no traffic. Phoenix is on a grid, you literally can’t get lost and can’t get stuck in traffic.

Buddy did. Said it sits in a valley. It will get so hot, your mailbox will melt.

Not true. You can research it, Phoenix police used that to try and get more federal money. And that was 10 years ago.

There are bad parts of PHX just like any other city. Avoid those areas at night and you will be fine.

I would much rather 100 plus with 10% humidity. Yes it's hot...but very easy to escape. Even stepping in the shade makes a huge difference. Every place is air conditioned. And has patios with misters if you want to be on the patio. Most everyone has a pool for a reason.

Don't do dumb shite like try and hike Camelback at noon in June(that's how you make the local news...and not in a good way).

Also...you can easily drive a little over an hour north of PHX and be in higher elevation in cooler temps. Flagstaff is usually 30 degrees cooler. Perfect for weekend getaways in the summer. Or....in the winter when you want to go play in snow (you can ski/snow board in Flagstaff).

ETA: I've lived in different parts of PHX metro (North PHX, Central PHX, Tempe, and now Scottsdale) since I moved here in 2005.

OP....if you do decide on PHX metro....as a single guy in your 20s-30s....my best advice would be to NOT move too far to the east or west of PHX metro. Meaning don’t move to Gilbert or Goodyear. There is lots of great areas for singles.....those are not it. Those are more family centered suburbs.

Scottsdale is the best(esp near old town for singles)....but the priciest. Areas of north Phoenix by Desert Ridge/HighStreet are great and cheaper than Scottsdale. Arcadia is another great area (but pricey).
