As much as Beaumont isn't exactly a desirable place, Louisiana would be smart to make that trade in a heartbeat.
back then I thought Edwards was being a smartass coonass, sadly, now I think it might not be such a bad trade

It’s a step below Baton Rouge

Like where? I can’t think of many places worse to live than Beaumont.

First 27 years of my life in the Golden Triangle. This checks out OP.

Why is Beaumont worse than every other place in the U.S?
It’s a very depressing region. East Chicago to Gary is up there too

It’s southern Louisiana without the vibrant culture.

vibrant culture.
Still not sure what this actually means

I did back in the mid 90’s and it fricking sucked. Made Lake Charles look like Vegas. Nothing to do, no culture, no entertainment, no nothing. Lamar is a crap college next door (literally) to a chemical plant. I couldn’t wait to leave. That’s said, there were some really attractive women there. So that was the only good thing.

My brother lives there now. Just moved back there from Montana due to job change (returning to employment with Exxon).

I spent an eternity there one weekend

I covered it for work multiple times. Found the people to be strange and unfriendly. Can’t think of anywhere I less rather live.
Only good aspect is: it’s between Baton Rouge for home games and Houston for pro sports.

The people seem more antisocial, depressed. Less events. I assume the high paying jobs go to people that live their life in their small town or out in the country cause the city seemingly has nothing to show for it. Much richer than Baton Rouge

Beaumont was better than almost all Louisiana cities until the 1980's oil crash. Bethlehem Shipyard was packed with offshore jackets and topsides being built. An uncle made bank there in the plastics recycling biz and invented the first plastic boat paddle in the 1960's. Then he made money selling and self-financing these plants to doctors and lawyers then getting them back on foreclosure when the market was at its bottom. After the oil crash he bought up lots of property and became the largest stockholder of the largest bank in town. He was a high school dropout from Lafayette. He owned an exotic animal farm for shits and giggles. He bought a 70+ Hatteras from John Wayne but couldn't keep it at their Crystal Beach camp and sold it because he didn't like going to Galveston use it.
I lived there as a kid until I was 5. That neighborhood ended up being all black by the late 80's and now is all Mexican. Saw my first vagina behind a cedar tree with neighbor girls when we were 3 or 4 comparing our bodies. They got to see their first little pecker.
Family friends owned a sandpit north of town almost to Silsbee. Eldest son had 5 or 6 power and sailboats, flew around the nation to go to Led Zepplin concerts. The sand they produced went to foundries and for catalyst manufacturing.
There still are a few neighborhoods worth living in there but much of the city is crap since the mid 1980's.

RIP Sartain's all you can eat catfish and shrimp.
Well before that was Al's in Groves, behind it were the commercial fishing docks. Stuff flounder overhung the platter sized plates. Mom preferred going to Leo & Willie's in Port Arthur.

Beaumont is Lake Charles with no lake, no fishingx no Darrell’s, a little more money, and easier access to Houston

I ate at a pretty good Mexican restaurant there one day
