Agreed. It was unfortunate and outcome was positive. The drug, consent, ambulance parts raise red flags for me and trying to get perspective because I’m not familiar with process

That sounds like complete bullshite. You or your wife should have been given the ability to make those decisions, not some school nurse.

Just listen to these people in the thread who are saying that your child got the correct care and you should stop complaining because they made the best decision that they could.

The school will always put their best interests in mind and it will be up to you to fight that. Whether the few thousand dollars is a big enough deal to you is up to you and your family. Personally, I would never let a "nurse" at the school determine what care is necessary without my consent.

This may not mean a lot to you, but you have an opportunity to hold these people accountable. I've been having issues with the AP school system and their procedures and the threat of litigation seems to be the only language that they speak.

seriously? Why? What does that do? Why involve anyone, other than a fruit basket to thank em for taking care of your kid

Your kid was hurt. It seems policies and standard of care were applied correctly.

Hell mine had a weird stomach bug a month ago, a stool sample was suggested. Yeah, 5k for a stool sample

Insurance paid 480, they wrote off about 3500. Now my part is 1k.

It sucks. But if you have kids you just expect shite to cost a bunch.

well, you need to go to school w them.

Seizures, head injuries, heart issues, unstable diabetics, catheters, all types of things happen.

Do you suggest they just wait fir you to call em back if your kid stops breathing? I just don’t understand this “it’s my kid, no one else can interact with them” mentality

For what? For following standards of care and policy to try to get the problem fixed and reduce the pain. Sounds horrible, yeah we should fix that

They ordered the ambulance, that should not be on you.

so, by using this argument, if you get in a car accident and you cannot consent because of injuries, a bystander calls for an ambulance, you shouldn’t be responsible for the bill?

Yes...my son broke his arm really bad at school playing basketball...

We ran up there...ambulance and fire department...people everywhere. My wife road in the ambulance with our son... I followed to hospital in my vehicle

I was grateful for the medical professionals who took such great care of our son...

Insurance covered everything after 2500 deductible if I recall correctly

do you suggest a Tylenol and just be in agony for an hour? What do you think is going to happen with a clinically safe and warranted administration of a narcotic for pain relief?

but his kid rode in it.

They didn’t put a healthy or I injured kid in it.

Policy is policy. You would be shocked at how many parents are unable to be reached at all. It us shameful. The school can’t just hope someone answers or calls them back or whatever as they go thru their protocol

They have to act. Did this qualify as a medical emergency, prob depends on who you ask. But I would want my kid to get treatment sooner rather than later

so you'd prefer your kid writhe in pain with a dislocated joint until you arrived?

it's not like they're putting the kid under general anesthesia.

you see this attitude alot on this board.

“They would have to call the cops if……….blah blah blah to my kid”

I learned a valuable lesson. The best adjusted kids are the ones not withheld from the love of others. Most folks are great and no one can love my kid more than me but I can’t do everything for or with them.

tbh, I can 'sort of' appreciate the other dudes post that I responded to, but in the grand scheme of things, I know what the pain of a dislocated shoulder is like, and I wouldn't want pain meds withheld from my son.

the injury warranted the narcotic pain meds. and as a prudent ems provider, it is wise and appropriate for them to take the child to the ER via EMS. It also gets the kid to an Md sooner than poing POV (per own vehicle) to the Er.

in fact, treating pain effectively is one of the driving metrics in healthcare and it starts with point of contact- so like in this case- with the arrival of EMS, who are trained and qualified to administer it.

and considering this was a child- albeit a teenager, I am sure the medic gave a small dose.

that why I responded with lighten up frank.

Usually it does. Not sure why in the OP’s case it didn’t.

Even if he hadn’t met his deductible- if that school has the same ins type policy in place- which they have to have something- it should cover anything that private ins doesn’t cover.
