Just got an alert that my SSN was found during a scan on the dark web . The alert came from my Discover app. How screwed am I?

They'll come after your TD account first.

I know someone this happened to. They compromised his kids too. Complete fricking nightmare. Secure checking accounts now.

Think you can sign up for something that monitors if anyone tries to use your SSN for lines of credit.

Yes. Some random illegal in Colorado just made up a number it happened to be mine. He was working in a meat processing plant in Colorado. Got a letter from the IRS saying I owed 68,000.00 in taxes.
Um, my name isn't Carlos Nunez. Took almost six months to get the situation cleared up.

Dark web has had mine since equivalent breach. I just turn off all 3 of my credit scores until I need it and turn them on, get credit, then turn back off

Lady I know was just issued a new social security number due to her SSN and identity being used to set up multiple bank accounts in her name from which the thieves moves substantial amounts of money around, leading to a wire transfer of several hundred thousand dollars to an overseas account. All of the hundreds of fraudulent transactions were linked to her name and SSN.
You're boned.

I’m seeing that I can set a fraud alert up with experian that’ll cover all 3 major credit bureaus to add an additional layer of security . Not sure if that’ll shut it down but maybe worth a try.

I have that service with Equifax. You can set up alerts for new account openings, balance changes over X amount, credit inquiries etc. This one doesn't actually stop anything but you are notified of it. It's fairly useful.

I just assume everything about me is compromised.

Had someone using my ssn and my wife’s name back in 07. Still haven’t cleared all of it up. The IRS is the funnest to deal with. Tax returns get kicked back every time and no efiling until they finally get it straight.

My grandfather used to carve his SSN into everything he owned, from guns to lawnmowers.

If you had sketchy credit it is a lifeline for a free reset. If you had good credit... it sucks.

Yep….you should freeze your credit file with all 3 credit reporting agencies and get a PIN number from the IRS that must be used to file a tax return.
