They also left a note with a number for the suicide hotline, just in case I need it.

When that credit bureau (Experion I think) got hacked they didn’t necessarily steal my identity but they made me dead. It was weird seemed counter productive. fricked my credit up for awhile but now I’m back alive and credit is back to normal.

Went to file my tax return about 8 years ago and IRS said it was already submitted so someone filed a return with our information. Spent quite a bit of time trying to talk to the IRS (on hold). Finally talked someone and they gave me the steps to protect myself and file my return. They could not have cared less about the identity thief.

Nah, they’re not coming for you. Once they’re caught or shut down, they move on to the next name. Keep the credit freeze, get a police report on file, and sign up for identity monitoring. You’ll be fine.

That freaking sucks. I'm sorry that happened to you. It's definitely a big fear of mine. Fortunately, no issues at this point. I have a credit freeze on all 3 companies.

Several times. The most serious one was when I started receiving unsolicited credit cards in my name. Apparently these thieves will apply for a few cards in your name, then change your mailing address. The most important prevention is to freeze your credit. When I contacted the companies issuing the cards, most were unhelpful and asked if I wanted to keep the cards. I’m of the opinion that lethal drone strikes should be used against identity thieves.

once, somebody hit me for like $900 at Walmart.I don't think it was identity theft per se, just an inside job in the store and they used my card info. Bank blocked it so no harm to me, but it is a little aggravating when you are trying to make that transaction and they block you.

Had my bank card info stolen at a Whataburger here in the Houston area years ago.

Saw charges on our bank account for several gift cards bought at a Walgreens in North Carolina. Apparently this is a common purchase when using a stolen bank card according to the police detective we talked to about it. They had video of the transaction but the woman making the purchase purposely kept her head down and back to the cameras while in the store.

They then turn around and sell the cards for cash. We contacted our bank, alerted them of the fraudlent charges, and they put a temporary freeze on our account.

The thieves then made an attempt to buy a bunch of furniture in a store in Jacksonville, NC where the card was flagged, cops were called and they were arrested. This was a month or two after Katrina and the perpetrators were refugees out of New Orleans. They even used the first name Katrina on their fake bank card.

It turned out that there was a gang of identity thieves in the Houston area that were getting jobs in places like fast food restaurants and stealing customers bank info to sell on the black market. There was a story on the local news about it a few weeks after our incident. Not sure what ended up happening to them or the folks that made the fraudulent charges on our account. We did get our money back though.

How do you lock down your credit?

Create accounts with Experian, transunion, and equifax. It’s free. Each has a different interface but once you create the account you just freeze your credit.

I keep mine frozen. If you ever subsequently are looking to get credit you can “thaw.” That means you unfreeze your credit for a set duration of time.

Yes, I found out when I ordered a copy of my credit report and it showed a mortgage for a home in Washington state..The guy was somehow able to use my data. Had fake ID, SS card (fake) and enough data to buy a house on a mortgage that was $385k. He was making payments on-time, too, actually raising my credit score.

Anyway, after that (it was in 1999) I have always kept my credit locked and have to call them or go online to open it up if and when I need to or want to apply for credit. Then I lock it again. No problems since then.
