It starts out somewhat like poison ivy, with blisters at first, then scabbing. The difference is the itching and burning, way worse than poison ivy, and it takes about a month for the sores to diminish, and that's if you get to the doctor right away. The itching/burning can last for a year after that, though not as bad as it was at first.
The doctor gave me an antiviral, steroids, and gabapentin for the nerve pain. It helped a bunch.

I had nerve shingles on my right 2nd toe. Went from perfectly fine to choking sobs in the ER parking lot within 30 minutes. Worst pain I’ve ever dealt with. I was on crutches for a week and had two subsequent flare-ups after that. Fortunately I haven’t had them again in the last six years.

It’s the first sign of dick cancer. Sorry.

My mother and mil both had nasty cases. The mrs and I have had both Shingrix vaccinations, so, hopefully...

Well, you haven't. Shingles is very painful. Ever heard of a dermatologist? They can prescribe some ointment for your itch

Yeah, mine was less itchy and more intense pain. Basically felt like a bad sunburn but all the time and not just when it was touched

Shingles affects only one side of your body, left or right. Strange but true.

I got them one year and they weren’t that bad. I thought it was some type of rash at first because it itches, couple days later it felt raw and like needle poking in my side. They wrapped from my left peck almost to my backbone.
It wasn’t painful, just bothersome for my shirt to rub the area. Someone told me stress would cause them to pop up

Had shingles when I was 13. The pain was awful. My dad thought they were chiggers at first, so he put nail polish on the affected areas. Getting that off was brutal once the areas became painful and sensitive to touch.

I had them in my optical nerve. For about a month I had what felt like a headache every day. Tylenol, etc didn't solve it. So I tried tooth gel thinking it was tooth related. Nothing awful, just a headache. I had just gotten married earlier that month which was the most stressful I've ever been. And had cashed out my savings bonds from the NAVY to pay for plane tickets back to my wife's cousin getting married. So maximum stress overload.
We were in the mall in Toronto when the pain hit me. I told my new wife that I'm sorry but I think I have a brain tumor. Over the course of 24hrs, my right eye swelled and I began to really consider the possibility that I wouldn't make it through the night to catch my flight the next morning. Not wanting to check into any Canadian shithole healthcare facility (I'd still be waiting to this day no doubt), decided to see the doctor when we got back. By then I was in full flare up mode and after a day in the ER, being pumped full of morphine, etc, they determined I wouldn't lose my eye.
Now I swear, if I ever get it again.. I'm eating a bullet. Most people don't go through what I went through. If you suggest it's shingles, go see a professional so they can get you started on a herpes medication to get it under control fast. Trust me, you don't want to wait.

This and pain meds are literally the only answer to a shingle outbreak.

i had headaches for a while after
I had a shingle outbreak on my scalp and upper face area. The headaches, pain, and itching were fricking miserable. Pain was a lot worse then I could have imagined from shingles.
