I had LASIK about 12 years ago and lately I feel my distance vision has turned to shite. I’ve been ignoring it but I either need glasses or have the procedure done again. Used Dr. Caplan in Metairie last time and guess I’d go back to him. Has the technology changed in the past 10 years? Anything to know about it now?

Good idea, since he'll have your records from your first procedure if they still exist. Medical records are usually purged after 10 years. This isn't a huge deal though.

Not really. I haven't changed the way I've done it since I started in 2009.

I had mine done about 12 years ago as well and just recently went in for a check up to see if I could get an upgrade because I’ve been having issues seeing near and having glare issues at night.

My far sight vision checked out 20/25 or 25/20, whatever, so I didn’t qualify for an upgrade but they ran some test and turns out I have a small but normal amout of cataract, and dry eye issues.

At my age there is nothing they can do except recommend using readers for seeing close and using rewetting eye drops to prevent my eyes from drying out.

I’ve been using the drops for about a month now and I must say it has helped tremendously

FWIW, I went back to the same clinic that did my LASIK back in 2007 so I was still in their system and they had my records which made things much smoother.

I’ve known two people (friend and friend of the family) who both had to have the procedure done twice. One had his vision start to get fricked up after just a week or so, the other had to go back just a few months later.

Apparently this is something that happens; this was two different doctors (one in BR and one in Shreveport).

But I’ve also known probably two dozen people over the years that have had it done and never had the first problem.

I’m right there with you man.

For about 10 years I had eagle eyes. But lately I find that my far vision isn’t what it used to be.

I wonder if you’ve had LASIK before, if you can have PRK the second time? That way the layer grows back.

I actually had PRK the first time and if I was eligible I could have a second surgery. Not sure which one they would do. But I didn’t qualify for an upgrade

What kind of drops are you using? Do you feel like consistently using drops has improved your vision or just comfort?

This. I still see damn near perfect with my right eye. Left is just a little off. Had procedure about 10 years ago.

It seems like my eyes are dryer now than they were before procedure.

I had it done in the late 90's twice. Doc told me going in he would have to probably do it twice as my vision was so bad. Was legally blind in one eye without correction. The surgeries weren't more than a year or two apart with him doing one eye at a time. I have had no issues other than when I hit 40 my left eye needed further correction yet read good up close. So now I am 53 and dont use reading glasses. My left eye does the close work and right the regular. Doc said he could get me glasses for one or the other but I would probably lose them. I always pass the vision test with 20/20 or better

Gotcha, how long did it take for your dry eye to go away? I got mine almost a year ago and still wake up 1-2 times a week feeling like my eyes are on fire.

My ex-wife had it twice, also through Dr. Caplan.

I keep several drops all over the place. In my truck, at my desk, nightstand, kitchen, living room, wherever I think I may need them.

I use Systane and Thera tears. Dr told me I can use them as often as I want.

Yes I feel much better and feel like I can see much better after using them.

She said to make sure I only use the rewetting drops and not the drops that claim to “get the red out”. She said those are like poison for your eyes.
