But really, an old friend of mine has a 4wd van he travels the west coast with. He has his fitness company logo on the side and uses it for promotion. He seems to enjoy the hell out of it. Fun if you are into adventure and minimalism.

RVs can't get into a lot of the great campgrounds....hell I am not sure an RV could even get up to Mesa verde!

My dad had that one (except it was red and white) when I was a kid. He was constantly fixing something. He finally got rid of it when it broke down on a second consecutive long road trip, stranding us in the middle of nowhere.

About 25 years ago I was drunk in the French quarter. Saw an add in the paper for a Volkswagen camper van, called the owner, bought it and drove the next day towards Central America. Ended up spending a couple of months down there. Ah...the good old days.

My brother and I were working on a fishing boat in the gulf of mexico. We got off the boat with what we thought was a lot of money at the time. Drove to NOLA and found an add in the paper for a 1971 Volkswagen camper van. It was 11:30 at night when we met the owner. That old van was 2 different colors but solid. The inside was cherry.
We left the next morning headed to mexico. Spent most of our time on the Pacific coast and a little time in Guatemala. At the time, shite wasn't too cool in Central America so we mostly stayed in Mexico.
I think we payed $1100 for the van. We never had a single problem with it. Trashed it out and sold it for like $3k in Austin. My entire trip cost less than $1500 and we didn't skimp on anything. Back then you could live like a king in a third world country.

I really want a VW Kombi. Let's say I buy one with a blown engine. Can I put like a chevy 350 in it? That would seem more reliable and something I'm very familiar with working on.

I doubt a 350 would fit in that rear engine design. What's wrong with the air cooled factory Porsche motor? Those things are bulletproof.

You really think you can just shove some crappy Chevy engine into a VW bus? Do you honestly think that would work or be cheap? Also a new engine does not guarantee reliability.

yea true. It's a small space in the rear of the kombi. I just don't want to break down every few hundred miles.
