Then buy something besides a Scooby Doo van. Or rebuild the one you buy. I'm sure you have enough time before you finish highschool to somewhat restore one.

Buy a G20 or a Chevy Express with a high roof conversion. Either find one with all the equipment (expensive) or up fit the interior yourself. Those are very sturdy vans and a lot of people fix the inside up for camping. The parts for all the major components are cheap and easy to find as well.
The VW vans are awesome, but can be a bit problematic. The Vanagons are not particularly cheap either if you want one in decent shape...and not every small town you encounter will have parts to repair it.

Yes, but they aren't cheap. Think $20k+ for one in decent working condition.
Why a van? 18 MPG is the main reason. It's compact but with the pop up top has plenty of sleeping area, a refrigerator, a propane stove, propane heat for cold nights, a sink and fresh water tank, a water spray nozzle out back, large battery to run things and can be plugged in to external power. Pretty sweet.
We did 2 trips at around 15,000 miles each. Made it to Prudhoe Bay on one of them. 4 months for the Alaska trip, 3 months traveling all over out west. I loved every bit of it. I wouldn't get an original VW, they have serious reliability issues. The Eurovan works well, Sprinter van campers are better and cost more. Several other options too. Roadtrek, Sportsmobile...

Great fuel mileage.
That 1.5L will run for 300k miles with just oil changes.
They also have insane amounts of room in them.

If it's something you really want to do, and you get a chance, just do it. If it works out, you'll always have that experience, whether good or bad. If you don't do it now, life happens and you'll always wonder "what if?" and wish you had.
