At the end of the day we are all just a number when it comes to corporate America.
They don’t give AF about you or me.

Yes.
First job out of college. Dec. 2001
A “management trainee” with Wells Fargo Financial Acceptance is really a collection agent.
Lasted 4 months. Kinda lucked into a real banking job after that.

I was communicating with someone the other day asking about the duty station selection sheet coming out of AIT.
That shite is the biggest lie the military has. Even recruiters don’t straight up lie like that.

I held many interviews in restaurants, usually at the request of the interviewee. They did not necessarily want anyone to know they were talking to us.

Yes I’ve been hired before.

My idiot nephew joined the Navy. He is a pacifist, which prompted me to ask, “What happens if you are sent to fight a war?” He said, “My enlistment papers say that if I object to a war I don’t have to go.” We’ve been laughing about that one for years.

Not too long ago, a friend of mine (former boss) had been recruiting me for a long time.
He finally approached me with a huge increase in compensation, working under him (which I like as he is Yoda), and resources of a much larger company. Yet, they wouldn’t give me the title I expected (VP) and went the “Director” route.....because the VP title carries significant stock benefits and such which was awarded with tenure.
I accepted the job, but then got a call out of the blue from someone who approached me as my supervisor.....not my buddy. Huge red flag and afterwards said buddy called and said he would, infact, be supervisor.
After that, trust was breached so when my current employer offered the exact same compensation package, promotion to Sr VP, and a heartfelt commitment to increasing resources, the decision (to stay put) was easy.
Never meant to leverage my firm or current boss (like a father to me), and I learned a lesson without getting burned.
Even with trusted connections, in the business world every man is out for themselves. Make no mistake.

This is why I tell people to never burn a bridge at old job no matter how much you want to possibly go off on a boss on your way out.
This in a nutshell. Give your 2 week notice, work like you always have, collect you payout and leave on a good note.
You may need that recommendation for your resume going forward, so no sense making enemies.

Yep. I left one of the best law firms in Atlanta for a fresh start and more entrepreneurial opportunity at small firm. It took me 4.5 days to realize I'd been sold a bill of goods. Left at lunch on first Friday, called recruiter and told her to derecruit me.
Probably the best move I ever made though. Otherwise I might still be a desk jockey.
ETA: and yes I begged for old job back. I hadn't burned bridges necessarily, but definitely pooped on a few. Lol.

That’s not true. I am a business owner, and I care about a lot of my employees. There are some I don’t even know, but there are many, about whom, I care deeply. When I look back over a quarter century in business the thing I’m happiest about are the people I helped get rich and achieve their dreams. I hired one guy out of college, and he left the company at 34 with $10 million...after taxes! I still call him from time to time to hear how he is doing in his new ventures and in his life. I’m very proud of him and proud of the small part I played.

Years ago I had a former supervisor call me about switching back to his contract. I knew his group contained first line support people who had rotating on call duties, so I made clear to him that I would not come back to be a part of that.
First morning on the job he tells me he needs me on the rotation.
New job 4 months later.

Dick and Jennys was my go-to spot. Never saw anyone there that we knew.

I was in a job I completely hated, was making good money. After about 10 months, I started applying for new jobs. I received strong interest from a company almost off the bat, 2 phone interviews and never heard back from them. 2 months later (should have realized something was amiss when they told me they wanted me, but had been on and off trying to get the position funded) get a call asking if I was still interested said absolutely. Do an in person “interview” with all of the local big wigs and one from corporate which was basically just them selling me on the position. I was going to work for the corporate entity, but would be at a local business unit. Got close to a 45% raise so it was a no-brainer. The position they hired me for was basically new so I had to go in and invent it. About a month in, my boss at the local headquarters left under mysterious circumstances. Month later I was called in, had the head of corporate on the phone and was told that my entire department company wide was being laid off.
Not necessarily lied to, but don’t put a full court press on to only lay them off 2 months later.

Co- worker left us for a supervisor position at the Port. Promised more money, big office , benefits, bonus etc. Once he was hired he was changing breaks on railroad carts ,working his arse off and they lied about the money... he was making less then he was getting with us. Lucky our management hired him back

I hired a guy just before the corona crap. His first day was the first day of WFH. He had nothing to work on for two months because clients canceled projects. We hung on to him, though, just because I was ashamed to let him go after pulling him away from his old company.

Companies always up-sell positions they are offering, just as employee’s always up sell their abilities. That’s part of the game....
Fact is, they hired you to do a particular set of tasks and it is worth that to them to have you do them. Maybe the company upsold the duties to you or maybe you exaggerated your abilities to the company...
