Where would you suggest looking for decent clothes that aren't so trendy you'll be laughed at in pictures 10 years from now? Is untuckit type stuff okay with a nice pair of jeans? I'm not talking suits. That stuff is easier.

ETA from me- I do think the Polo brand has become cheap- but still acceptable. If your wife (and Holy Baby Jesus she better be hot for this kind of BS) thinks it’s trashy get your polos from Brooks Brothers.

Brooks Brothers is better than blue label but not as high quality as purple label.

He used to be somewhat of a laidback type of guy. I wonder what happened.

My wife fusses at me because I don't iron my underwear or any other clothing before going to the store.

This is one of the dumbest things ever written here, and this board has produced some amazingly dumb shite.

They take longer to engage and disengage than other fasteners (or no fastener at all), they tend to be more fragile (both in breaking and in coming unsewn), they can get caught on things, and they can cause puckering in the garment.

In the year 2021, they are primarily an aesthetic choice. Which, for the record, I choose quite frequently. But they make very little sense on casual garments, outside of attempting to make those garments appear less casual than they actually are.

If you disagree, please expound. You know, outside of just insulting me

I think it is basically impossible to argue. A case in point is you won't find a single button on any piece of serious modern technical clothing.

I could throw out suggestions, but they would be tremendously obvious and boring. To me, it's more important to just focus on building out a core of basic, classic essentials. For example, while I own a few pairs of jeans, I never wear them for the purpose of "fashion". I wear them to be what they were invented to be: a rugged, damned near tear proof work fabric. If I want to wear (relatively) casual pants somewhere, I wear chinos, which are essentially similar to jeans (in that the fabric they are made of is twill), but they use a finer (as opposed to coarser) knit, which makes them thinner/cooler and smoother in texture, both of which make them look more formal, while still being very casual.

As an example for shirts, anything with a tail should be tucked in, period. It just looks silly otherwise. So if you want to wear a button down shirt not tucked in, make sure the seam is even all the way around the bottom. It should also be cut a bit shorter than a shirt that you intend to tuck in.

And that's the rub. It's usually pretty easy, within reason, to dress down more formal wear. However, casual things made to look fancy look silly. I'll give an example:

LINK

Assuming that link took you exactly where I want it to, the guy in the top left (grey shirt, blue pants) looks sharp. He looks casual, but it looks good. The guy in the video (on the right, second from the top) looks ok, but would likely look better if his sleeves were rolled up. The dissonance between the causal look and having the sleeves all the way down and buttoned looks a little silly. But still, no where near as silly as the other images with the shirts tucked in, which look absolutely absurd.

While it's mostly arbitrary and cultural, the west has fairly set ideas of what is formal and what isn't, even if the average person may not be able to put their finger on why. Cool tones tend to be more formal than warmer tones. Closed fasteners are more formal than open fasteners. Tucked in is more formal than untucked (which is the same basic idea re: fasteners).

Now, this post has gotten absurdly long, but I'll end with this: if every item you put on is purposeful, you'll likely be fine, as long as you have a basic understanding of aesthetic. Guys run into problems when their thought process starts *after* they put something on, and then they start trying to decide how to make it "dressier". That's a very dangerous game to play

ETA: I just realized that I didn't actually answer your untuckit question. They aren't really my jam, but they basically hit the important points I made about untucked shirts. The bottom hem should basically be even, and they should be shorter in length than a shirt you plan to tuck in. So yes, I would much rather someone wear that untucked than attempt to untuck a shirt that was meant to be tucked in.

The link took my phone to a guy with a gray long sleeve pullover like top. I have some of those.

I'll look into chinos. I only have jeans, khakis and wool suit slacks.

Banana republic is a good brand? I thought they were mall clothes.

The desktop version shows all the images on the page. Mobile probably makes you scroll through them. If you scroll through them, I imagine you'll be able to see what I mean.

And you're actually not far off on what you have. Khakis are essentially a very specific, very conservative type of chino. But chinos come in all cuts, colors, etc. You can get them in solid cotton, or blends that have some stretch to them. In levels of formality, I would put jeans > chinos > coarse thread wool pants > fine thread wool pants (suit pants).

Wool pants get a bad rap in the deep south for obvious reasons in the summer, but they are actually extremely versatile, and extremely comfortable. If you're looking to shoot the gap in formality between chinos and suit pants, unpleated, uncuffed wool pants with a bit of what I would call visual texture to them are classic as hell.

ETA: When I say "visual texture", what I mean is that the garment is made up of fibers of more than one color, though not making a pattern. A really obvious example are the shades of color and flecks of white that you see in blue jeans.

It's a meh brand. You shouldn't buy anything actually "nice" or expensive from them, but oddly enough, they make fairly solid casual staples if you wade through their trendy bullshite. I have some solid navy crew neck tshirts from them, as well as a couple pairs of chinos, and I think at least one thin/light solid color sweater.

But I only buy those things from BR when they go on sale, because I find them overpriced, otherwise

And once I get out of what I would call my "every day casual attire", I try to do made to measure as much as possible, because I find a good, tailored fit is generally more important than the fabric, the style, etc. I get my dress shirts from Proper Cloth online, etc.

Have a bunch of LL Bean polos and khakis, a couple suits, a couple of those Columbia light weight shirts, some pullovers for winter and shorts and a couple pair of somewhat modern looking jeans.

I cant stand shopping for clothes.

80% of the clothing that I own is from LL Bean or Orvis. I don't really care if it's in style or not. My wife has never complained about how I dress. Occasionally she'll tell me she doesn't like a certain shirt I own or something like that.

I dress pretty basic. Jeans, shorts, slacks, button downs, polos, t-shirts. Some combination of those unless it's the once every 5 years I wear a suit

I do. I’m painting 2500sqft house, refinishing 3 exterior doors, knick knack crap as it comes and I cut two acres weekly.

I have a lot going on.

I ask my wife due to this thread and she said I dress fine for a 43 yr old guy. Her words "the day I see you in some skinny jeans we'll have a talk"
