Let's say the price of corn (just an example) drops significantly. People will rejoice over cheaper food but they're not thinking about the farmers who are taking the hit. It's ridiculous to ask people to feel differently about oil.

Corn is a bad example to use considering we have had Ethanol shoved down our throats by Congress just to prop up some farmers in Iowa, Nebraska, etc

Corn wouldn't be artificially inflated as high as it is otherwise

I been doing the dollar store since times was good.

I'm a single guy and I found out that I'm probably going to make it through the slide unless the whole company bellies up, which I very seriously doubt happens.

Still sucks though. I'm hearing daily about people getting laid off and I'm in a small industry. Some of them have decades of service and are very good knowledgable people.

As I expected, you can't see the forest for the trees.

$50/bbl oil is great but $27/bbl oil is a problem - it means the global economy is slowing down tremendously.

The recent downturn in oil since the start of the oil has saved people some money at the pumps, sure, but it has also coincided with a loss of approximately $1.1 TRILLION in market capitalization in the S&P 500 alone.

For the millionth time, oil is NOT causing the drop, but the only way you're going to get cheaper oil from here is if the fear of a slowing global economy begins to wane. If you're paying less for gas in July 2016 than you're paying right now, it is very likely to coupled with a further decrease in the stock market which is good for no one that actually matters in this country.

Yes farming is a different puppy.
Govt subsidies it to the point it is hard to say it is a free market business.
I run an operation for my in laws who retired and it's all about dealing with govt red tape over borrowing $1 million to plant and rolling the dice on a crop.

At one time in Kansas the govt had a program to help younger people buy farms and manage farm. I looked at the numbers and you would have to be half crazy to do it, love farming, or just not know what you were getting into. It was a good opportunity but very very risky for younger people.

oil is projected to be $50 next year - no one is predicting its going to stay this low, so for the short term this is great for the consumer.

that is my only point, making a doomsday prediction, like youre attempting, is pointless.

for now, the low price a good thing, for millions.

plus, despite the economy slowing, the job market is still solid LINK

I know we likely have many on here that are in the industry but...

You decided to enter a field that is one of, if not the most volatile industry out there. If you didn't prepare for a possible downfall then oh fricking well!

Don't bitch at me because I'm happy that I'm not spending $75 for a tank of gas!

Hey I made a pile of cash off Katrina, sorry your house flooded and you lost your guns but frick you I made a buck.

You really should have forseen building a house below sea level was not going to last forever and been better prepared. Perhaps a rainy day fund would have helped.

Enjoy your cheap gas if it helps you but STFU about it and stop being such a giant smug twat.

I knew that and now I'm cringing

Does dairy get similar subsidies? A gallon of milk was $1.99 in the Midwest this summer. Times was haaard for my dairy farmer friend's family.

Sure, but that isn't where it stops with oil and we both know it. No one is asking you to feel bad about paying less for gas - at least no one that you should take seriously. However, there are comments spread throughout this thread and others that take it much further than that, to the point where people are actively rooting for the demise of the industry. That is ludicrous.

Such a bitter kid.
Lay off the slow roasting hotdogs and sausage rolls.
They are for selling not employee eating.

Yes, Dairy gets subsidies too. There was a big deal a year or so back about their subsidy possibly not being renewed which would have pushed milk to like $6+ per gallon.

Intelligent people care if any sector of the economy suffers, because they realize that the ripple effect will effect the entire economy and everyone in it. The only exception are people in non-merit guaranteed jobs (like state drones). Everybody else is effected to one degree or another, just like when sub-prime mortgages crashed. And since oil and gas is so huge in Louisiana, I'd guess the people effected first will make noise first. Trust me, if the entire economy tanks like some say it may, you'll be bitching on your FB too.
