It takes a grade A frickhead to be happy about mass layoffs.

I didn't know the O-T here was filled with the cold blooded bottom feeders of America, HR "professionals," but apparently it is.
I can imagine anyone being happy that someone lost their job.

I've said it before in the other threads about this subject, I don't like layoffs at all, have been the victim of one myself.
I think the issue on this board is that many O&G folks brag about their earnings when gas is $3-4/gallon, which creates a real hardship on those of us struggling with those kinds of insane gas prices.

Fair enough and I condemn those who were bragging for not having some class. But it doesn't justify a calous response to others misfortune.

Yea I mean I get it it sucks but I doubt they were feeling too sorry for everyone else when the economy was in the tank and gas was nearly $4 a gallon.
This never happened. 4 upvotes and no downvotes for something that is an outright lie. This place is incredibly out of touch with reality with regards to O&G.

Sure, but his premise is correct.
There are a lot of factors that cause the O&G industry to be shite on by the average person, not the least of which is the fact that people are very knowledgeable of the price they are paying for gas as an individual expense. However, there is plenty of truth in the statement that there is segment of the population that are jealous/envious of the amount of money that can be made in O&G by skilled, unskilled, educated, and uneducated workers. That last group really irks a lot of people which is evident by the reaction on this board.
There are also a vocal minority of O&G employees who feel the need to flaunt their income and that group has somehow been used as the poster child of the entire field.
It is sort of a chicken and the egg scenario: Were vocal and pompous O&G employees the reason for the widespread backlash to O&G in general, or are the people who look down on the O&G industry responsible for the vocal and pompous attitudes displayed by a some in the field?
I'm not really sure, but this is definitely a new development because this disconnect between O&G and the general public didn't exist 15 years ago.

Operators are a big culprit but they are hardly affected by this downturn.
There are a few people with the oilfield trash and proud of it shite, but those are such a small segment of the field it is hardly worth noting. However, that minority has OBVIOUSLY gotten under the skin of the OT.

It comes in the form of "I just bought a new F350. Didn't need it, but why not".

I'm incredibly happy that gas is at a reasonable price. I'm not happy that thousands of people are getting laid off. However, I don't think we should have elevated oil prices just to support the elevated lifestyles of the O&G industry. The fact of the matter is, there needs to be more effort in reducing the cost of extraction and production. I understand it's difficult and costly to operate, but in a free economy system, someone will always move in and find a way to do it cheaper.

Most people who work with oil are worried about losing their jobs. I don't think that's an unreasonable thing to be worried about. The most annoying thing is reading all of these posts by morons who complain about people being unhappy about losing their jobs.
I'll never understand why so many people here hate the oil industry so much, aside from jealousy of the amount of money the oil related workers were making when it was booming. Louisiana is a better state when O&G is prosperous, that's undeniable. Even if you don't live here anymore, you shouldn't want Louisiana to struggle.

And people don't realize that this is happening due to countries intentionally messing with the market.

Crude is skyrocketing up to $32 now. So it's over.

I still don't get how low oil means bad economy? Job loss I get. But if oil is cheep shouldn't everything else. People spending money. Therefore the market should be outstanding.
Next thing they will tell us is that this cold snap killed the crawfish season. Prepare for 3 dollar pound crawfish this spring.

The frustration isn't out of jealousy. The frustration is out of seeing so many O&G workers blowing through their excessive money at the expense of their wallet at the pump. Times have been shite for the economy as of late, and paying $3.00+ for gas was a big burden for a lot of people. While many people struggled, the O&G workers were flourishing without any care for other industries that were having a hard time making ends meet. Now that the tables have turned, folks in other industries are happy to bill up for $20 ahead of what is shaping up to be another major recession.
Not every wants to see others struggle, but overall, people just want fairness.
