it doesnt, in the short term - cheap oil is great for the avg consumer

in the long term, no one knows what will happen, if they did, they could have predicted this crash

However, I don't think we should have elevated oil prices just to support the elevated lifestyles of the O&G industry.

if you think that is what happened.

Riddle me this: if the O&G industry had elevated oil prices to support the lifestyles of their employees, why did they stop? Why don't they just elevate the prices again?

Bueller? Bueller?

Elevated - used as an adjective in this case, not a verb.

Low oil doesn't CAUSE a bad economy, but it is often the result of a bad/slowing economy.

if oil is cheep shouldn't everything else.

Myth. Companies justify higher energy prices for the rise in their products/services, but they don't lower them when energy gets cheaper.

Energy prices, as measured by CPI, were down 12.6% for the 12-months ending December 2015. However, CPI was up 2.1% for all items less food and energy, and food was up .8% for the 12 months.

They're not spending their savings. Look at the market since the start of the year - every good day correlates to a good day in oil, every bad day correlates to a bad day in oil. Perhaps Rocket31 would care to explain why that is the case?

Oil has gone up $5 in 2 days. I'm pretty sure that trend continues.

Once again, I've never read anything remotely close to this on TD. You must be confusing facebook with TD

Traditionally low oil prices are good for the economy, but the wsj, slate, and guardian all ran interesting pieces today putting forth the idea that low oil prices (in the new shale play world) are actually bad for the economy.

Check out the articles for further info. Not saying they are correct, but this is a unique situation.

the Facebook statuses of "yeah baby! Keep that $4/gallon gas up! My petroleum degree paying off!" were pretty great

I haven't had FB in 5 years, but I just don't see someone with an engineering degree gloating like that. They're typically very humble and wouldn't brag like that in public. Common rig hands on the other hand are a different story

But they're not. That's one of the issues. People aren't spending what they're saving in gas money

Adjective, verb, doesn't matter. The forces that are causing $30/bbl are many of the forces that caused $100/bbl. Supply and demand.

People rightfully should bitch whenever supply is artificially deflated to support higher price, but this downturn is proof that doesn't happen with O&G. I've got no problem with people celebrating the increase in supply, but lately the problem has been slowing demand, which is a bad thing for everyone no matter what Rocket tries to tell you.

I'm not saying it was everyone. I realize that most O&G people are regular joes with families but believe me it happened. Although the engineers saying it didn't surprise me
