I’m not scared of heights. It’s the falling and landing from high places that I’m not a fan of.

As I’ve aged, I certainly have a new fear of them. I used to climb a 20 foot ladder with no issues whatsoever.
Broke three ribs last time (and only time I fell of a ladder) and it resulted in the worst pain I have ever been in. I realized I don’t bounce anymore and that my balance sucks as well with age.

Went to the Grand Canyon for the 1st time about 5 years ago. Got out of the bus, walked towards one of the railings. Kinda looked straight down and that was it. Wouldn't get within 20 feet of another rail.

I think I get a little bit of vertigo when visiting places like Hoover dam, Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park, etc. But it passes pretty quickly- kind of just like getting your sea legs under you offshore. The only time I’ve really been scared of heights is when the one year old was running around the balcony of the penthouse condo in Orange Beach. There was really no danger of him going over or through the bars but I never liked my kid being that close to anything like that. Maybe because I know the Eric Clapton story.

It’s not the fear of heights, it’s the fact the brain wants to test the truth of the fall and outcome. Test reality, science, morality, etc..

Yes and it’s borderline crippling. I’ve had nightmares about falling from cliffs, buildings, airplanes from a young age into my 50s.
But I’ve been able conquer it for brief situation.. Strangely, I’ve climbed 40 feet up trees in a climbing stand to hunt, but I always wear a safety harness on the way up and down and while in the tree. I’ve been to the observation deck of the Empire State Building, the top of Chimney Rock in North Carolina, the Space Needle in Seattle and hiked from the rim to the Colorado River and back at the Grand Canyon. Some of that I’m sure was my ego and not wanting to be a pussy in front of my wife and kids, lol.
I tried to watch Alex Honnold’s “Free Solo” documentary about climbing El Capitan at Yosemite with no ropes or safety gear and couldn’t get through it. I respect the hell out of his and others’ physical and mental strength and skill. But I don’t understand the minds of people who do that for recreation.

When I was younger I did not like heights, but sought out situations to build past the fears and managed to get some things done. The biggest was climbing Angel's Landing at Zion National Park.
But it was an effort and done in incremental steps.

I'm accident prone. I fall off the ladder every time I put up the Christmas lights. Always land on the grass or in the hedges so I never break anything. Just scratches and bruises. I don't fear it anymore. I turned it into a game. The over and under is set at 2 this year.

I was 18 years old the first time I freaked out on a 2 story glass bridge in virgin records. I had the overwhelming need to get down on all 4’s and I had to be helped off.
It hasn’t gotten better since.
Doesn’t help that I’m also claustrophobic. The MRI biopsy I had to get last year was a nightmare come true.

Go to Ft. Benning Ga, get on top of a 60 foot tower, repel by first leaning straight back! You'll feel like you're going to fall straight back but you have no choice. The Drill Sergeant will ensure that you go. Yes I'm afraid of heights and that shite still has me rattled. That was in 1984!

Claustrophobia is my deal. Even as a kid, I got freaked out I'd held down. Had a full on panic attack in an MRI tube a few years ago. Ended up having to find an openMRI, which was still stressful.

It’s not totally irrational to have some healthy fears.
I think it is actually healthy. Kind of the old King Kong story line
Plus, I think all humans are inherently scared of heights. Some just dont pay it any attention
Pesonaly, I was not that worried about heights when I was young but the older I get, the more it seems to bother me. I always thought it would be the other way around
