A reported wave of scam robocalls has been spreading in New York — but don't call the number back, the FCC warns.
The scam phone calls are known as "One Ring" or "Wangiri" robocalls, and are known to target specific area codes in bursts.
quote:
The calls, which only last for one or two rings, often occur multiple times in the middle of the night and use a "222" country code from the African nation of Mauritania. Other country codes have also been used, including "232" from Sierra Leone.
The goal of the scam is for recipients to call the number back and incur big per-minute toll charges, similar to a 900 number. The fee that piles up gets paid largely to the scammer.

I love the call screening feature on my Pixel.
It plays an automated message telling them they are being screened and prints out what they say on my phone. I like to waste a little bit of their time too.

Nope i get calls from Illinois, and it's an Asian woman yelling and speaking her native tongue, but it's a recording. I laugh and hang up.
They called yesterday.

Someone at my work kept getting those calls and answering them.
The next day I say the article that it is a scam and they bill your phone if you pick up

Yes, and the millions from Nigeria should be hitting my account this week.
Who knew Africa had that kind of money to hand out? Live and learn I guess.

Believe the scam is that you get hit if YOU call back. That’s why they ring once/twice then hang up, hoping that you’ll call back.

How do you get scammed by calling? Is it tied to some 1 900 number type deal? I didn't realize something like that was still around

Maybe I'm unfamiliar with how phone bills work but what the hell is the point of this? You pay the phone company for the call, not the number you're calling. What do "scammers" stand to gain from this?

It’s somehow linked to charges for making international calls. According to the article, the bulk of the charges make it to the scammer.
