I make tamales pretty regularly and always buy it from one of the Mexican grocery stores in town.

Not sure I’ve ever looked for it somewhere else

The Latin groceries all have it. It's a staple of their diet.

hydrogenated lard

I prefer the non-hydrogenated lard. If it doesn't ever go bad, then I don't want it.

I have lived since the Eisenhower administration and have never seen Lard in a residence, much less consider purchasing it.

So you can put me in the category of “not noticing Lard shortages”.

The preppers are probably hoarding it. Lots of uses in a SHTF scenario.

Long shelf life
Cooking
Use on chapped skin
Diaper rash
Mechanical lubricant
Fire starter
Soap making
Lamp oil
Make a 40 day candle with a tub of crisco and a string
Etc, etc....

Back in the day I stocked the baking aisle. Three pound cans of Crisco was one of the items that we sold huge quantities of. The volumes i see on the shelves nowadays wouldn't last 4 hours back then. glad things changed.

How did people look back then vs. today? Vegetable oil and sugar are what is creating all of these whale pods you see at walmart. Lard is the better choice.

What people are discounting is the amount of immigrants and illegal aliens that have entered this country in the last decade. It's another strain on the economy and infrastructure.

Save your bacon grease, keeps pretty much indefinitely when refrigerated. Free and no shortages.

I’ll have to agree with this post. If you cook enough bacon it adds up and is useful for so many things

My mom cooked with Crisco lard. They either don’t make it make it anymore, or I can’t find it.

I miss lard.

Ironhead Heyward fried his pork chops in lard with his famous cheesecake. Died of a heart attack. Go figure
