Side rant, I hate the cake shows. I actually hate most Americans cooking shows.

Great British bake off is the best.

I’m curious bc I’ve never seen this kind of justification before…

Do people really consider video games the same as fishing, hunting, sports, etc?

I feel very strongly that being outdoors, exercising, developing physical skills, etc is much better for humans than video games. I figured most people felt this is the case but maybe I’m wrong

i personally look at it this way

"being outdoors, exercising, developing physical skills, etc is much better for humans than video games"

but some people like different things. and gaming is fun and enjoyable.

with that said....the things you named can be taken to the extreme just like gaming. I know as many or more guys who neglect their duties as a husband and father to go fishing or hunting(especially duck hunting) as I do that neglect those duties playing video games.

same with exercise...i know a bunch that would not go to a sons baseball game to go and hit the gym.

all of those things can be just as harmful as playing too much video games and in many cases more so because atleast with video games you are in the house.

now i will say for kids.....yea they are much better off doing the outdoor activities.

but playing a game of madden or mlb the show before bed instead of watching tv or youtube.....no biggie. Now online gaming...yea got to keep an eye on who they are talking to.

Anecdotal sure but playing video games with my son allows us to bond over something he wants to do rather than me force my interests onto him. He got into shooters and showed an interest in firearms. One of the many proud moments I had with the boy was taking him to his first range day.

My daughter on the other hand likes Minecraft and The Sims because it's a virtual doll house. The difference is she can create the dollhouse any way she wants and allows her to be creative.

It's all about balance. You won't get it right the first time but if you pay attention, you can see how it can be used for good.

Well this is interesting.

I guess I never realized how many adults play video games with their kids.

I guess I look at building skill sets and never considered playing video games a skill set but I guess it is. I always assumed it was bad for your health (eyes, no exercise, over stimulating, etc).

I was asking if you differentiate between games on your phone or games on Xbox. To me, there is no difference. Just curious if I’m alone in that sentiment.

To me, playing games on your phone is the same having your head buried in your phone for any reason and the same as playing Xbox and the same as watching Netflix and watching the game(s). It’s all just entertainment that takes time away from something.

dont really see the difference either.

and i was just giving the gamers a hard time with the douche comment.

like i said before...i see guys that fish and hunt neglect their families more then i do gamers doing it.

i personally enjoy both hunting, fishing, gaming and many other things but prefer to spend time with the wife and kids.

world of warcraft is still gay as frick

I talk to a bunch of parents at school, sporting events, etc that tell me “I just can’t get them to put down the controller long enough to do…” it’s usually a frustration about grades or sports.

That's on the parents, not the video games.

I allow my kids to play video games because it's one of the things they enjoy. (And they don't spend all their time on video games, it's one of many things they enjoy) But they know that if the chores aren't done or their grades aren't up to snuff, the PlayStation is getting unplugged and locked up in my gun safe.

The parents CAN get them to put down the controllers...they just choose not to be a parent. Instead they let the children dictate the house rules. And those are shitty parents.

That’s some BS.

The kids will hate you when they are older because you couldn’t be reasonable.

It’s like the same thing as the parents that named their kids these trendy dumb arse names

OP is the same as parents just shoving a tablet in their kids face because they don’t want to deal with them. He doesn’t want to deal with having to parent a kid with interests outside of his own, so he just bans everything he doesn’t like

You can develop physical skills and play video games all in the same day. Gamers who turn out to also be gym rats are actually rather common.
It also depends on the thing in question. I wouldn't say fishing is developing much for example since you spend most of your time sitting around waiting for a catch. Not to say it's a bad way because to each their own, but not much going on is my point. Hunting can be fairly similar, although not always. Sports are the obvious exception.

On the same note, video games can do better at developing mental skills just due to the nature of the games. The overwhelming majority include strategy, puzzle-solving, and in the case of multiplayer, communication and teamwork. It all seems silly on the surface level, but the basic idea behind teamwork doesn't change from one thing to another. It's only the details that change really. Many RPG games include a shite load of dialogue and reading in general, which I definitely believe improved my reading comprehension when I was growing up.

well to be fair at first i was just trying to troll a little. i dont get to often so figured better take my chance.

my initital post was pretty spot on...got to let kids have fun but has to be balanced.

adults is same thing...any hobby can become a terrible thing if taken to far. I have seen plenty take duck hunting and especially bodybuilding too far to the point it ends marriages etc.

but i do feel very strongly that online gaming should be monitored by parents and in general can be a lot for a pre-teen to handle. i have been at friends and seen them getting cursed out by 10 year olds. just have to be a parent and be careful with it.

at the same time online gaming can be a great way to make friends across the globe..like most things with kids...has to be balance.

to be fair...when my job is slow i spend way way way too much time on here

Haha, we don’t have tablets.

And my kids aren’t interested in video games bc they’ve never had them.

My son taught himself a scripting language for one of the games he likes. Not anything super elaborate but I was impressed how he learned on his own how to make code do something. Especially since they don't teach anything like that in school anymore whereas growing up as a little kid in the 80s there were Apple or Commodore machines we learned BASIC on.

Ye old media canard that stirs up parents with the premise of "OH MY GOD THINK OF THE CHILDREN" without critical thinking nor mature discourse. Like anything, too much of something isn't good. My kids still get some time outside as well as activities outside video games.

I had an NES growing up and my parents still made me go outside.

The problem is lazy parents get pushed to the forefront of this issue. Then lazy media capitalize on it because it makes for stirring up wine moms who only pay attention to sound bytes and don't read past the by-line.

I doubt they’re not interested. More likely you’ve made it clear your feelings about them and they’re afraid to say anything.
