any of you guys with kids ever put them on the old mario gameboy/n64/snes games?
I have a NES and a Sega Genesis, but they don't see much use anymore.
The newer systems are just so much more advanced and honestly way more fun imo. The only time I play them is just when I need a little nostalgia hit from my childhood. Though my 9 yes old daughter enjoys Mario and Sonic, but she can only play for so long because she would rather play online with her friends from school on Roblox or Minecraft.

What do you play them on? Can those old consoles be connected to newer tv's?

I am tolerant of game use at my house, but have had to tell the kids to cut it off numerous times because of the people they were playing online with. Too many shitty people getting access to kids. Kids need guidance, far more than they are getting today.
My oldest is six so we’re not playing online yet, but I’m fully aware of the threats he will face when we cross that bridge. fricking groomers everywhere.

So you conveniently left this out earlier during your description of your week which lists what are basically your own hobbies.
Golfing, reading, fishing, all hobbies. Suddenly your life doesn't sound so miserable because what you initially described included 0 of that.
There are people who choose to game instead of golfing, fishing, reading books, or watching sports. You do the same thing as people who play video games, except you have your own hobby preference, which is fine. So get your stick out of your arse with this idea that grown men with kids playing video games is some crime against God
Some people would have you believe that while the nerds are gaming, they work 12 hours, go to the gym, chop timber, build a model ship, kill wild game so their family can have sustenance, volunteer as a fire-fighter, and satisfy their wife every single day

There’s a game for that.

Lol some of my arguments when I was in elementary school was my 6th grade neighbor was out playing sports and not doing his homework.
Sounds like me. Until I learned fighting just delayed the inevitable. Being consistent pays off I suppose

I have an adapter that has the yellow/red/white video/audio cables and just plug those into a pretty old flatscreen Sanyo TV that is still kicking. It was the first flatscreen I ever bought in like '06 while still in college.
They sell those things now that look like the old Sega or SNES consoles that are pre-loaded with hundreds of old games that use HDMI. My brother has one and it's pretty cool.

I don't have and kids, but I could see seizing the system Monday-Friday during the school year and allowing them free roam on the weekends assuming they're involved in extracurriculars, have lives, friends, and good grades.
There's not going to be any of that locking themselves in a room, playing HALO, and jacking off to porn and eating Doritos and drinking Mountain Dew.
Reject modernism.

I used to let him watch and play whatever on weeknights until his grades went to shite. This is the new strategy to improve them and it’s working so far. Until he learns the self-discipline needed to balance work/play I will provide it.

“I just can’t get them to put down the controller long enough to do…” it’s usually a frustration about grades or sports.
If they're making good grades and have a social life then so what?

Our kids are not allowed to use any devices after they get home from school until all homework is completed, studying done, and chores are done.
Once that is done, they can use them up to 2 hours per night, and also must be turned off by 9 pm and brought downstairs.
Most days, they have various after school activates and they don't get close to 2 hours.
Complete bans on things is what turns kids into rebels.
Edited to add, they also lose their devices if ANY grade average drops below a B and/or we feel they are not giving their best efforts. I'm ok with a B if they are trying hard, I'm not ok with a B if they are being lazy.
Of course they have also lost their devices for talking back, not doing chores, bad behavior, etc.

Why raise the kids myself when a screen can do it for me? I have more free time than all the other parents I know

I'm in a few cruise groups (trashy I know) and the number of people who post all upset because they can't figure out how to hook up a gaming device to the tv in the cabin is... well insane.
You are paying all this money for a vacation, there are 14,000 things to do, and you let them sit in a room all day and play video games?
And when people ask them... they say... well my kid will be angry and miserable if I don't let them?
What? You don't "let them?" Get out of here.

I guess I just don’t see what benefit the games bring to my kids? What is the goal of this balance ?
The benefit is kids like to do fun things.

I have friends on both extremes. Couple only have one tv in the house and it has local channels. They allow no video games, and control the amount of TV their kids watch.
I know others who essentially use TV/phones or tablets/and video games as a babysitter. The only rules they have is a bedtime where it is all turned off.
I can only say from experience that the first group seems well ahead developmentally than the second. They "play", read, or do their chores instead of plopping down in front of the tv. They also have better manners than the others, which likely says more about the overall parenting than the tv/games point

Well your position has changed quite a bit since this conversation started. Glad to see that.

We definitely limit screen time as much as possible.
Having said that, it helps me to let them play after school while I'm still working. Also, makes for better road trips.

This is stupid. You can parent your children and also allow video games.
