Anyone else have stories of cheap relatives?

I like my in-laws a lot. But, they can be some cheap folks.
They are staying with us for a week or two around the holidays.
We're not poor, neither are they, so the money isn't really the issue at all.
But here it is. The MIL gave her daughter, my wife, $50 for "groceries, etc" for their stay.
This has included all meals paid by us, including eating out 3 or 4 times, so far.
Just an extra sprinkle are their dogs. ""We didn't bring any dog food with us, because we know yall have plenty here for them".
Mind you, the in laws receive SS (x2), pension from the State of Mississippi (x2), pension from military (x1), mandatory IRA distributions (no idea how much), and until very recently a regular income from a job.
I think I'd rather them have just kept the 50.
End rant.
ETA: I forgot one more. The wife drove their car to the grocery store (Why? I don't know) over the weekend. She had to fill up the gas tank. They know she had to get gas because she called them and asked what octane they required.
At least they told her to just get the 87 octane.

You had to put a ring on them, didn’t you?

You sound like Clark Griswold baw. But no, no cheap relatives. Although when people stay with us we cook a lot and feed them.

Whoa, hold up there Hoss. How are they able to receive SS and a state pension from the state of Mississippi? Did I miss something somewhere?

I have to sneak my card to the waitress to pay when my father-in-law is out to eat with us and he gets pissed when I do it, always insists on paying. Crazy they won’t pick up a check after eating out several times in a week.

The SS is reduced because of the state pension but not completely gone. Provided they have 40 quarters of private sector work.

I don't know the details. Just know they get it. FIL definitely worked private business in addition to state government work. Not sure about MIL. She was in state education for most years.

You don't get to pick your family, but you do get to pick your in-laws.

As a woman, I would never do that to my daughter and her husband. That’s rude and inconsiderate that they expect you to feed them.

My father-in-law is incredibly cheap. When they come to visit, it's like they're on a an all-expense paid vacation. He doesn't open his wallet once. My wife is fine with it so I don't say anything.

Here's where I lost it. What

Bringing over dependents, but not willing to bring what they need?

Not cheap relatives but there is a very trivial event that has stuck with me until this day that I think is bizarre.
In college (around 1997), a friend called me up one weekend morning and said they had a fantasy baseball draft for a league and one guy dropped out that morning and needed another to fill it. So, I said sure. My roommate and I agreed to do it. We went out for lunch then over to a guy's dad's house who was also in the league. About 10 guys there.
When we arrived they asked if we wanted a sandwich or something to drink. Like a ham and cheese on bread. We said no thank you, we just stopped on the way. No big deal.
After the draft, as everyone was leaving, the dad (who also was in the league) who hosted the draft starts talking about what a great spread they had for us food and drink wise (soda, chips, and lunchmeat) and asks everyone to throw in $5 for the food AND convenience of it all.
Everyone looked at him like he was joking and it was really awkward for about 20 seconds when guys were like "This guy is serious." So we all (mostly college kids) threw him a couple of bucks and I said I would never go to that guys house again.
It was just strange. But, I guess some folks are brought up differently.

Haha that's how my in-laws are. I have to tell the hostess before we even sit down to bring my the bill discretely.
My parents offer to pay every time as well, but I prefer to pick it up unless it's weird and they keep insisting.

My father’s side of the family are pure trash. My parents were killed in a car accident when I was still an infant. My maternal grandmother took my brother and I in and adopted us. She kept us away from our father’s family because, well they were pure trash. I only saw them maybe once or twice growing up and that was just from running into them by accident in public. When I was 14 my grandmother died though we were sent to live with them. An uncle and his wife took us in. Being orphaned my brother and I both drew a monthly social security check which was meant to be used for our upkeep. That’s why they wanted us. Of course most of our checks went to drugs and booze for them. They lived in what I can only describe as squalor. The uncle would work sometimes doing construction. But most of the time he sat on his arse smoking pot and drinking cheap beer. They rarely had food in the house and the place was crawling with roaches.
That first Christmas after my grandmother’s death I remember all of them brought their kids to the grandparents house on that side of the family. They had brought all the kids Christmas presents there for the kids to open, including my brother and I. They handed out the presents and when they were done all the kids started opening things like Nintendos, stereos, all sorts of toys, etc. so what did my brother and I have? Well, we each had one pack of cheap Walmart tube socks. I know they’d used the checks meant for my bother and I to buy most of those presents. And all they got for us was a pack of fricking tube socks. frick everyone of them.

I respect cheap people
I hate people that live beyond their means

brother in law is cheapest guy I know....CPA and fits the stereotype. I've seen him shut down mid vacation because they spent their "allocation". Refused to let his family go out to eat with us the last 2 nights at a restaurant.
chewed his sons (my nephew's) arse yesterday for buying a Dr. Pepper at the gas station yesterday. He gets the spending notifications from the CC on his phone.....
He and his wife both make good money mind you...

They sound like liberal democrats. Mooching off others is in their DNA. You chose your in-laws poorly.

My FIL makes almost over 2x what I make, house paid off, no debt whatsoever. If I borrowed a gallon of gas to finish mowing my lawn, best believe he's at my house the next day for his $3. I'm not even joking.
Also, we just went out to celebrate my BIL graduating college. I paid for my families portion(around $60). I tipped $30. My FIL paid for everyone else(around $100). He tipped $5. Service was amazing, btw.
