I was thinking of getting a jump on the Christmas decoration and putting them up for Halloween.

we keep it simple and have so much fun the kids prefer to stay at home and "get in the box" rather than trick or treat,
Paint or cover a cardboard box for a refrig or washer/dryer black, position it at front door,
Cut 2 holes in box, one for your head, the other for your hand,
Decorate your head and face with white actors makeup like a human skull, with blacked out eyes,
Cut hand size hole in the bottom of plastic bowl, position over hole in box,
Sit inside box with your jaw resting on box with hand thru box hole and bowl, fill bowl with candy,
Position a light to shine into trick or treaters face,
The trap is set...
It is amazingly funny to witness the greedy reaction of kids and adults who think they have hit the candy mother load with no one watching them,
At just the right moment say "take one only" or hand out a piece OR grab a finger as they reach for a hand full,
We have seen parents leave their kids screaming in front of the box as they see dad running for the street,
Additional monsters can be positioned in the shadows to scare off victims in shock
Great entertainment for everyone!!!

Tonight I'm going to a local fabric store to purchase several yards of grey bridal mesh. Im taking a flashlight with me to do a "flashlight test" on the fabric. You want a very thin mesh that will be invisible at night but also capture the clear image from the projector to give the illusion that ghosts or phantasms are appearing in thin air. If you shine a flashlight onto mesh and the light on the mesh has clean edges, you're good to go. If you shine the light on the mesh and the edges of light are blurry, the weave of the mesh is too loose and will not produce a good illusion.
Also, you want to slightly light the background behind the mesh. Very important. The reason is when you project the phantasms onto the mesh, you still want to be able to see the landscaping or house behind the mesh to produce the 4d (holographic) effect.
Also, place the projector either at a very low side angle or high side angle so that people cannot see the projector. Hide it behind a gravestone, pumpkin, or landscaping. DO NOT place the projector directly behind the mesh because people will see the image and also the glare from the projector lens and it'll ruin the illusion.
As far as video is concerned, spend $35 on one of AtmosFEAR's digital projection DVDs. I purchased the Phantasms and Witching Hour DVDs. You can purchase these DVDs at your local Spirit Halloween superstore or online at Amazon.
Phantasms is pretty scary and not for small children. Witching Hour is wonderful for all ages, more whimsical than frightening.
I plan to use Witching Hour outside in our courtyard. The witch appears out of thin air and starts casting spells which results in apparitions appearing all around her. She desperately casts more spells to get rid of the ghosts. It's fun and pretty awesome.
As for the Phantasm projection, I plan to cover the large half moon window over our front door with bridal mesh and project Phantasms onto it from within the house. People driving by will see some very realistic and awesome ghost effects which will appear as if the inside of our house is haunted.
This will definitely be a show stopper in our neighborhood.
I'll take pictures this weekend and post them on here.

Yes. I didn't want to link to my FB so I made the gif. It's one of those 3 direction lamps with red and purple lights. I stood it up one year with the fog behind it and placed it in the yard and made the kids walk past it the next year.

Thanks, if you look close, there are some glowing skeletons in the web, but I couldn't get them to show glow real bright. I might need to change them up this year.

Man, Scooba, you could completely freak people out of you combined clever video projection with your props.
For example, you could setup a life size humanoid figure completely draped in black cloth. Make sure to smooth out the wrinkles as much as possible.
Then project digital phantasm or witch video onto the figure. Suddenly the figure has come life in a very realistic way.
Here is an example:

Or you could project the video straight down into the coffin. No one would notice the projector above them if you did it right.
That would be awesome!

I considered the projector but settled with jumping out of the coffin myself. 
My neighbor was throwing out a super old 6-7' tall mirror that was solid wood. It was hazy and faded so I covered the mirror part and sprayed the wood to match the coffin. Covered it in pulled cotton to look like webs. Flicked some black light paint all over it and lit it with a black light and strobe.
I also threw skulls in my fish tank for the annual party. Man I miss those.

oh hell yeah, when my kids were young, our house was the go to haunted house in the area, pretty elaborate, gory walk through tunnels, wild arse sound affects all over the place, strobe lights, cemetery w/tombstones, etc.,great stuff for the kids, and of course, treats for the parents, fun times
