Have a potential job offer there. Just looking for some opinions for current/past residents. Would be the wife and I (no kids) who prefer outdoor activities and have put the whole nightlife thing behind us.

Yes, I know it will be cold as balls in the winter.

I can't speak firsthand but I hear nothing but awesome things about that area, sans the worst of the winter.

It's a cool place. Very far-left politics if this matters to you. Go by the lake during the Summer.

I once stayed at a Holiday Inn Express there during the late fall years ago after a UM/ UW game? Does that count

Arctic tundra. Friend lives there and he's turned into a simpleton SJW. Liberals everywhere. Don't recommend.

Madison is fricking awesome. It's often ranked as one of the most livable cities in America. It is very much driven by state govt and the University, but is big enough that it offers a lot of the benefits of a large city without many of the drawbacks.

Five lakes in the area, great dining options, friendly people, vibrant downtown, many big companies with a presence there, tons of outdoor activities. Only potential drawback I could see would be real estate prices and of course the winters, but this winter hasn't been bad at all.

Yes, it's a very left leaning area of the country. If you're not someone who needs to live in an echo chamber, you'll be just fine.

From an article I came across:
quote:

It took me 33 years to make it to Madison, Wisconsin, and I grew up a state away in Michigan. To be fair there is a giant lake between us. Why now? Madison has momentum.

It's Top 5 in software publishing job concentration and developer salaries while still being 2 percent below the national average for cost of living. That's a rare combination. It's Top 10 in best cities for young entrepreneurs. And Madison has the highest concentration of Millennial talent in the country.

Madison surprised me, in a good way. It's the smallest big city in America and I mean that in the best possible way. It's a Top 15 global city in access to venture capital per capita because of its connectivity.

Berkeley of the Midwest-Take that as you may.

Although they have been importing some culture from the South Side of Chicago so the drugs and gunplay is no longer restricted to Allied Drive.

I live an hour away and visit as little as possible. My brother lives there only for his job. He grew out of his liberal tendencies and now is not a big fan of Madison.

Frankly, it is about impossible to talk about Madison without the politics of the place. The leftist mayor got voted out because he wasn't left enough, so was replaced by a Bernie like dyke.

Buddy is from there. Good people, but different culturally from the SE. They love to drink. Deer hunting is fantastic.

This is understating things a bit...

I've had people whisper approval to me, outdoors, when they spotted the Trump bumper sticker on my truck. I repeat, whisper. Outdoors.

It's a huge echo chamber. Just a progressive one.

eta-Sold a car to a guy from Verona (Madison suburb) and he was whispering approval in my driveway. I told him he didn't need to whisper out in the country.

I think going forward we should just call them "Trumperstickers".

I'm fricking bringing it today.

I have heard it referred to as "Little Moscow" and it definitely has earned that reputation but it is a beautiful city nested between two lakes. Expect to receive some ribbing if you wear any Alabama gear.

That's kinda odd. How would one rib a Bama fan, when we've only played once in recent memory, and lost, and there's not really a rivalry there?

And it actually makes me kinda happy because it means that there are still people/students who follow football. Our students are so fricking overrated, but don't even get me started on that.

The Isthmus, which is always shown in pics with the Capitol building, is actually a fairly small part of the city. And fricks up traffic patterns.

Beyond showing up late and leaving early at games?

The number of international students is unreal.

Might have something to do with it...

This is likely where we'd look to live, or further west out in the country. The job would be with Epic there in Verona.

SJW politics annoys the shite out of me, but I can deal with it if necessary. Especially if the nutcases keep their nuttery downtown and by the University which is what I've seen so far.
