A Haitian gang that kidnapped a group of American and Canadian missionaries has demanded a $17m ransom for their release, according to the country’s justice minister.

Liszt Quitel told the Wall Street Journal the FBI and Haitian police were in contact with the kidnappers from the 400 Mawozo gang, who seized the missionaries at the weekend outside the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The 16 Americans and one Canadian include six women and five children: an eight-month baby and others aged three, six, 14 and 15 years old, Quitel told the Journal.

Christian missionaries are to be commended for their commitment to saving the world, I suppose. But they do some dumb shite.

I was browsing twitter after the news broke. I was amazed by the number of Haitians that said they did not want Americans there and that America should stay out of there. I think many people have this false idea that most of the people in these countries want our help.

Haiti is dangerous as shite, and has been for a while. Why would these dumb-asses go down there?

They also have no right to make the decision to bring minors down there.

Also, a question for the attorneys. Is this organization legally liable for sending their people into harms way? Do they also have to pay for all of the medical care, rape counselors, etc., that these people will need?

Are these the missions where the 15 year old kids with no construction experience build a home for some poor family?

And most of those Haitians probably lived in Miami.

Sounds like the plot to a film, where the Head Reverend is initially in on it thinking that there will be GoFundMe(s) set-up with quickness to bail them out and he can get a big cut for himself, but he crosses the head kidnapper and now there is grave danger.

They were building an orphanage accoring to one news report.

The gang is not just any gang, but a major and well known gang that doesn't waste their time with kidnapping a couple of people, these are known for kidnapping bus loads.

And lest we forget the history of Haiti: it was once the richest country aka most productive country in that part of the world. Then they had a very successful revolt, kicked out or killed all the French and all those who were part European. (The southeastern USA tobe got some very nice families that were of mixed race who fled the Haitian violence back then.)

Since then, they have defined themselves.

It happens more often than you'd think. The less adventurous missionary trips go to the Dominican Republic instead.
