So you compared line by line and the only thing that changed was income?
That means your income went up but your with holdings stayed the same and you are surprised you owe more tax?

It really is astounding. I can't tell you how many people I've met that think making less money is beneficial for taxes.

I screwed up my withholding this year. Had made some tenporary changes in 2014 to offset a financial event and didn't change them back.
Got killed. Will file April 15.

I have to file quarterly and my accountant already warned me that Q1 was going to be ugly.
If every person had to actually write a check to the IRS instead of withholding; this country would be a much different place...

Just curious if it's just me... We normally get a refund and this year owe a fortune. Married and filing jointly
Congrats on being "rich".
Some non-working leeches thank you!!!

Yep. There is something about actually watching your checking account go down like that. Makes it seem so much more real.

Of course, this doesn't include deductions/adjustments. But so many people think that all of your money is taxed at the same amount once you change tax brackets. Not the case.
True, but that higher bracket usually comes with loss of deductions.

Will owe less for at least two reasons:
Wife went from being an independent contractor not making much and also with no withholding, to getting a higher paying job with withholding.
O&G royalties are down a lot.
ETA: same tax bracket

Nope, I got a cousin who does mine for me and I just give him $20 bucks.

This happened to me this year. AGI went over $80k and lost my sweet student loan interest deduction. I can't complain too much because the mortgage and property tax deductions are awesome!

Someone entered a new tax bracket.
Either that or the income boost triggered a loss of certain deductions or pushed them into AMT territory.

Did you change jobs or did your company/boss change? Or pick up a second job?
Question for some on here who may know. Co-worker at a new place (open 6 months or so) has been taxed at SEVEN PERCENT???? This is not some small place, company has thousands of employees?
How do employers calculate the tax? Just go from that start date assuming you did not work the other 6 months, and their pay will be your yearly income?
For a time I had 3 jobs this year. One was VERY part time. I probably made $5000 only at that location. I had two other jobs. One was full time. How can an error like that be made? 7%??? IB4 yes this co worker should have looked at their check and done some math, but damage is done.
I think we will owe this year too. But basically we will owe the IRS what will amount to a dinner. A fricking nice steak house dinner, with drinks, and dessert, and tip.
But not thousands.

That's a huge jump going from receiving a refund to owing "a fortune." Seems like there are missing pieces here.
Did you purchase health insurance on the exchange?

Unless you had major changes in income, deductions, etcetera, there should be no major changes in your amount.

Made that mistake last year. Changed my taxes when we got our bonus, and never changed them back. We owed like 10,000. Hoping for a refund this year. Changed our withholdings and had a bambino!
