Frederick seems like a pretty nice place though. I really enjoy how Virginia separates city and county governance.

This only really applies to the northern VA area outside of DC. The further away from DC you go the better it is.

Winchester and Frederick county are very much conservative

I was born in Winchester and my mother taught at Handley.

It was a sleepy town, where nothing had ever changed.

The valley was always poorer than the Piedmont, but Berryville and Winchester both had real money. And they survived the war without too much damage.

I moved away a long time ago and I’m sure my memories are hopelessly out of date. I believe Winchester has exploded?

We’re truly an occupied people though, and I mean that seriously. And if I was moving to Virginia I would look at the SW quadrant. Stay away from DC and stay away from Richmond.

It’s admittedly personal for me, but the politics break my heart.

I spend tons of time in Winchester. I really want to like it but it’s just blah. If you have kids, I like Aldie, Va. Winchester just isn’t somewhere I would want to stay.

Covid has taught us if we have land we are much more able to entertain ourselves. So that’s not necessarily a detractor. Being close to the outdoor activities in the area is a reason we’re looking at it. Restaurants and especially bars is secondary. We can cook pretty good ourselves. We are looking for more higher acreage and if we drive into town or all the way into dc on the weekends or whatever we can do that. But looking more for a safe and stable place that isn’t super expensive and has a little character to it compared to say a sprawling Houston suburb.

I actually live in Rappahannock County and work in Front Royal. We love the area. Very low crime but lots of meth around here but what small town does not have that. It is horse country and outdoors living up here. Hell, I live 30 min from the nearest grocery store. I love living away from people. The people up here are nice but not as welcoming as La folks. If I can be of assistance, let me know!

I love civil war anything and often spend weekends taking my kids to battlefields or going hiking.

I stayed there for about a week once and everyone I encountered was friendly

It’s not far from Catocin, which is a beautiful spot

One thing that I distinctly remember about Winchester was that some place was playing loud rainforest sounds and I couldn’t figure out where they were coming from

You could hear it driving down one of the main thoroughfares with the windows down

That’s about all I’ve got

Mountain people can be standoffish. The Germans in the area are also colder.

I too love civil war history. Explain your internet situation to me seems to be the biggest utility I need to worry about. I’m also trying to maybe buy some empty land if I can and build on it. But need to figure out potentially getting utilities to it and how hard that would be in the area.

I love in VA(suburb of Richmond) and even though it's liberal by who wins, NoVA and Hampton Roads have a huge deal to do with that. Many are transplants not really Virginians with Virginian ideals. I'm a Louisiana transplant myself but have been here from 14(1991) and I'd say I'm a Virginian. Geographically, this state isn't liberal. Much more territory is Republican and southern valued. The libs stay where they are safe, inner cities/suburbs.

It has an incredible Civil War history there. Patton’s grandfather was a colonel in the Confederacy and was killed at the Third Winchester Battle.

Brother lived near there, was pretty cool to walk a few blocks one morning and see that grave. Grandfather and grand uncle in same grave. A ton of history in that area.

Believe it or not, internet is out of DC and lightning fast. Lots of wealthy DC people with second and third homes around here. You know, the kind that put sanitizer on their kids hands while hiking and shite like that

Seems like you are closing in on a place as you asked this question a couple of weeks ago.

Internet - yes, that is your issue if buying rural.

If you are buying/building, that could take a while. In which case Starlink is your answer as it's just now coming to our area. However, you won't be able to order a setup until you actually have an address you can tie it to (it's not mobile, at least not yet anyway). And they are saying there's a 6 month delay from when you order and shipping date.

Without Starlink, you need to check any address you are considering for availability of DSL. Satellite like Hughes, Viasat is literally unusable for WFM. Otherwise you'll be using cell/LTE, in which case you need to be concerned with what kind of cell coverage ATT/Verizon/Tmobile has at your new address. Tmobile Home Internet is only available from certain addresses but if so its unlimited at $50/mo.

Do you like to drink? There are an amazing array of brewpubs, cideries, distilleries and wineries around Winchester.
